Complete game pitching performances lead the way this week.
Â
Two Big Green pitchers gave it their all this week, both pitching complete game victories. Sophomore Rachel McCarroll led the softball team to a win over the Princeton Tigers. Meanwhile on the road Clark Gilmore went the distance against the Brown Bears.
Â
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Â
Â
Rachel McCarroll, So., San Jose, Calif., P, Softball
Â
Rachel McCarroll led Dartmouth softball in the circle throughout a four-game slate last week. The highlight of McCarroll's week came on Friday, April 28 in Dartmouth's series-opener against Princeton. She pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout against the top seed in the Ivy League, leading the Big Green to a 7-0 win.
Â
McCarroll finished the week with an ERA of 1.75, allowing just six earned runs in 24 total innings pitched and four appearances. She allowed just six walks and struck out nine batters in an impressive week of action.
Â
Â
Â
Clark Gilmore, Jr., Redding, Conn, RHP, Baseball
Â
Gilmore did the heavy lifting for the Big Green in their 2-1 victory over Brown in the final game of the series in Providence on Saturday, snapping the team's losing streak. The junior right-hander went the distance on the mound — his first outing of longer than five frames — throwing 109 pitches and allowing just one unearned run on six hits without walking a batter while striking out five, matching a career high. He is the first Dartmouth pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game in four years and the first to win one in seven years. To top off his performance, he fielded consecutive plays behind his back to record outs in the second inning, one of which was featured on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day.
