Five student-athletes were given the recognition for their performance in athletics and in the classroom
HANOVER, N.H. — Five Dartmouth student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Women's Academic All-District At-Large Team, as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
The group of five includes Isabella Godsick of women's lacrosse, Lucy Handy of women's rowing, Hatley Post of field hockey, Samantha Yao of women's golf, and Gwen Wattenmaker of women's alpine skiing.
To be included, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale), have completed at least one full calendar year and reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The quintet will now go on the ballot for CSC Academic All-America consideration with the first-, second- and third-team honorees being announced on June 22.
A junior from Hunting Valley, Ohio, Godsick was crucial for a Big Green team that won four of its last six games, including a thrilling 15-14 victory over No. 24 Princeton in the home finale. Godsick led Dartmouth in draw controls with 72 and finished second in the Ivy League in draw controls per game with 4.80. She is currently majoring in sociology and boasts a 3.86 GPA.
Hailing from Houston, Texas, Post shined between the posts for the field hockey team this fall. An Academic All-Ivy and All-Ivy Honorable Mention, Post finished second in the Ancient Eight in saves (46) and save percentage (.742) in league contests. A four-year member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad, Post has a 3.83 GPA and is an environmental studies and history double major.
Handy, a senior with a 3.79 GPA as an English major, is a First-Team All-Ivy and Academic All-Ivy honoree after helping the Varsity Eight boat to a win in the petite final at the Ivy League Championship.
A senior from Berwyn, Pa. and co-caption of the Big Green, Yao earned First-Team All-Ivy honors after tying for fourth at the Ivy League Championship. Yao had three top 10 finishes this season and owns the lowest career scoring average in program history (75.89) by more than two strokes (minimum 45 rounds played). Yao is an economics major with a 3.68 GPA.
Wattenmaker, a senior from Olympic Valley, Calif., is a computer science major with a 3.73 GPA. A co-captain of the women's alpine team, she had five top 10 finishes this winter, including four in the giant slalom. Wattenmaker scored points in 11 of the 14 races she entered. One of 12 skiers for the Big Green at the NCAA Championships, Wattenmaker gutted out races to score points in both events while dealing with an injury.
The 2022-23 Academic All-District At-Large Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletics and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
