NEWTON, Mass. – Danielle Burke tallied her first goal of the season in the first half, but Boston College scored a late equalizer as the Dartmouth women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the Eagles on Thursday evening in Newton, Massachusetts.
Â
"It was a hard-fought match and we wanted to challenge ourselves, coming here this week and to simulate what it's going to feel like to play the top end teams in our league," said Stacy and Nick Branca Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer
Taylor Schram. "I couldn't be prouder of our effort tonight."
Â
The Big Green (3-0-2) opened the scoring midway through the first half after some great ball movement in the midfield created a crucial opportunity.
Taylor Williams played a quick one-two with
Hailey Rorick before launching a high-looping ball past the Boston College defense.
Carly Retterer timed the run perfectly, getting behind the defense with an open path to goal. Retterer played the unselfish pass towards the back post to Burke, who ran onto it to smash it into the goal.
With under 10 minutes to go in the second half, Boston College (2-3-2) was awarded a penalty kick after a Big Green handball in their own box. Claire Mensi stepped up to take the kick for the Eagles, and calmly tucked it into the bottom right corner to tie the game, 1-1.
Â
Both teams had their chances in the final eight minutes of play as both goalkeepers were forced to make a save.
Daisy Granholm nearly put the Big Green back in front just minutes after the BC goal, but her shot from just inside the box was saved by Wiebke Willebrandt.
Â
Emily Hardy made five saves in goal and the Dartmouth defense once again put on a brilliant display as they limited the Eagles' chances on goal.
Â
"It was a really hard game and I'm really proud our team," said Burke. "We executed our game plan, we played hard and I'm really excited to see where the season takes us."
