HANOVER, N.H.—The No. 17 ranked Dartmouth men's hockey team played to a 4-4 tie with Colgate on Saturday night at Thompson Arena. The Raiders skated away with the bonus point after winning the shootout.
The Big Green opened the scoring just 1:57 into the game as Braiden Dorfman scored his second goal of the season. Dorfman was parked in front of the net as Steven Townley took a shot from the high slot, the puck went off Dorfman and trickled into the net to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead. Matt Fusco picked up his second assist of the season on the play.
Colgate answered at the 6:45 mark of the opening period to tie the game at one.
Dartmouth responded with a goal of their own just over three minutes later as Nikita Nikora scored his second goal of the year. Nikora picked up the puck and curled back towards the Colgate net before finding CJ Foley in the right faceoff circle. Foley then fired the puck towards the front of the net. Alex Krause was in front of the net and the puck squirted to Nikora who found an open spot of the net for his second of the season. Foley picked up his fifth assist of the year while it was Krause's first.
The Raiders once again responded before the end of the first period to make it a 2-2 game after 20 minutes of play.
It took over 15 minutes of game play in the second period for a team to find the back of the net. At the 15:24 mark, the Big Green broke the tie. M. Fusco blocked a shot deep in the Dartmouth end and the puck was picked up by Eric Charpentier. Charpentier skated the puck out of the zone before finding Nikora in the high slot of the Colgate zone. Nikora made a defensemen miss before taking a shot. The rebound found Charpentier who backhanded home his first goal of the year. Nikora notched assist number nine while M. Fusco notched his third assist.
Shots were 9-4 in favor of Dartmouth in the second period as the Big Green held a 3-2 lead after two periods.
3:39 into the third period, the Raiders tied the game at three.
The responses kept coming as less than two minutes later, the Big Green scored their fourth goal of the game. Sean Chisholm won a faceoff and Flinton won a battle for the puck and flung the puck along the ice into the bottom right corner of the net for his first of the year. Chisholm notched his third assist of the season.
The Raiders tied the game at four while on the power play at the 7:47 mark of the third period.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the regulation and the game went to overtime. In the five-minute overtime period, Colgate out shot Dartmouth 2-1 but could not find the back of the net. The game officially ended in a tie but went to a shootout for the extra point.
Colgate scored on its first two attempts while Big Green were turned away three times.
Roan Clarke made 24 saves for the Big Green.
M. Fusco and Nikora each tallied two points while nine Big Green players tallied a point. Nikora has now tallied two or more points in five straight games.
The Big Green have next weekend off after starting 5-0-1 in their first three weekends. Following the bye, Dartmouth hits the road for a pair of non-conference games starting on Friday, Nov. 29 against Boston College. The Thanksgiving weekend closes with a trip to Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 1.
