HANOVER, N.H. — With Dartmouth football's season opener just over a month away, and preseason camp kicking off in less than two weeks, the Ivy League held Football Media Day on Monday. Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach Sammy McCorkle, along with seniors Jackson Proctor and Braden Mullen, were the Big Green's guests.
"I think our guys have had a really good offseason," said McCorkle. "We talk all the time in our program about taking care of little things, attention to details — nothing's too small — and holding each other accountable. Those are the things where we really focus in the offseason."
The Big Green return plenty of experience with more than 25 seniors and fifth years on the roster.
"We've got a lot of guys who have the potential to be really good," said McCorkle. "I think the biggest thing we try to accomplish is taking it day-by-day, focus on that day, win that day, win that play. And having that sense of urgency of wanting to get to the next level. We don't know what that next level is, but we're going to continue working to find out where we can take this program."
Proctor is Dartmouth's most experienced returning quarterback after leading the Big Green in passing yards last season (716), while adding 168 yards on the ground.
"We have Paxton Scott, a fifth-year receiver, and a lot of receivers coming back who played significant time last season," said Proctor. "That's going to be the biggest thing for us, to lean on our leaders and the guys who have that experience, because they've been in those moments."
Braden Mullen was an honorable mention All-Ivy honoree last season and finished fourth in the Ivy League with 5.5 sacks, despite missing the entire second half of the season with an injury. He also echoed experience as an important theme for the defense.
"Player-led accountability is big where maybe the coaches don't see everything, but it's about players holding each other accountable in the locker room, in the classroom, on the field, keeping everybody at that same expectation and continuing to set the standard every day," said Mullen. "The experience on both sides of the ball really allows for that envelope to be pushed."
