HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Green and Huskies played a physical 90 minutes Friday, and despite Dartmouth pulling within one in the second half, UConn held on for the 2-1 win.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 1-2-1 on the season.
The Huskies and Big Green were scoreless for most of the first half, but not for a lack of trying. Dartmouth had an excellent chance just seconds in and continued to pressure, but UConn got on the board first, with the first goal not coming until the 37
th minute. UConn took the lead into the second half.
Dartmouth looked to come out hot in the second half, but UConn capitalized on a turnover, scoring just over a minute and a half out of the locker room.
Despite giving up a goal, the Big Green created multiple chances and had possession for most of the second half. In the 59
th minute,
Trenton Blake, who was recognized by the Ivy League and Top Drawer Soccer this past week for his contributions on the field, took matters into his own hands, picking up a loose ball towards the top of the box and firing it through traffic and past the goalkeeper to put Dartmouth on the board.
With the momentum in their favor, Dartmouth continued to pressure, but physicality continued to play a theme, and the Big Green found themselves two men down in the 78
th minute, ultimately sealing the victory for the Huskies.
Despite the loss, Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi is proud of the way his team battled for 90 minutes.
"I just thought the whole game to be honest we were on the front foot, in possession, out of possession. We showed intensity. We showed so much courage on the ball," Oshoniyi said.
"I'm just really proud of the guys. Yes, we have to find ways to win but to give that kind of effort. I've been here for six years, and I haven't been in a game like that where our guys showed that much courage, that much sweat to fight and battle a really good UConn team so I think it bodes well for the future."
The immediate future will begin on Tuesday when the Big Green welcome UMASS to Hanover. Blake says the team's intensity will be important as they take on the Minutemen.
"I think bringing that same intensity that we had today is very key for us this upcoming gam," Blake said." The intensity we had was great and almost brought us back to tying or winning today."
His head coach could not have agreed more, saying "I think matching that intensity. We have to. That has to be us. That has to be who we are is to put teams on their back foot, to have the courage to be able to play the kind of brand of soccer we want to play," Oshoniyi said. "I think if we bring that, I just don't see many teams, UConn couldn't really hang with us."
Kick off for Tuesday's matchup with the Minutemen will be at 7 p.m. You can purchase tickets
