HANOVER, N.H. – The men's soccer program took the field looking for their third straight win and their first of Ivy League play Saturday, welcoming the Brown Bears to Burnham Field.
An arching goal from
Vasilis Moiras from outside the box sealed the 2-1 victory for the Big Green, starting the conference season with a win.
With the win, the Big Green move to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play.
The Big Green and Bears remained played an evenly matched game through most of the first half. In the 29
th minute though,
James Wilson won a ball battle down the left side and knocked a cross into the box. Douglas Arveskar headed it along to
Oskar Magnusson who got just enough on the ball to beat the Bears' keeper and put the Big Green up 1-0.
Less than ten minutes later, the Bears tied the game, making the score 1-1 headed into the second half of play.
While the Big Green and Bears traded chances early in the second half, neither team were able to find the back of the net.
In the 61
st minute though,
Trenton Blake zipped a ball to Moiras who one touched it past two defenders and sent an arching shot from outside the box over Henrik Weiper to give Dartmouth the lead and secure them their first Ivy League win of the 2024 season.
"So as soon as I got the ball, I just started driving and my initial thought was to just shoot the ball," Moiras said. "I took the shot, got a bit lucky off the deflection, but a goal's a goal."
The Big Green went up 1-0, gave up the tying goal, but found a way to win, a quality Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi is proud his team displayed.
"I just like our grit and our grind. Last year, we probably lose that game somehow. This year, just to have a group that wants to win, wants win for each other," Oshoniyi said. " think there was a bit of nerves today with the Ivy opener and things like that so I wouldn't say we had the best quality, but at the end of the day some of these Ivy games are grinds so I was really proud of how hard the guys grinded and found a way to win a game."
The men's soccer program will have another battle next week, travelling to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on the Big Red of Cornell and while they will enjoy the win tonight, Oshoniyi says his team "realizes we haven't done anything yet.
"Beating Brown, they ended our season last year so there was a lot of motivation for us going into that game so now we have to continue to find that motivation headed into Cornell, continue training and try to make some noise in the Ivy league," Oshoniyi said. "But I think the guys feel like we haven't done anything. It's great to be 1-0 but there's a lot of soccer left to play."
Moiras agreed, saying the win is great but they just have to keep working.
"Obviously, it's a great first step, first Ivy game and we get a win but as I said we just have to stay humble, keep working, and focus on Cornell."
The Big Green will not have a midweek matchup, taking a week off before battling the Big Red next Saturday. Kickoff in Ithaca is scheduled for 4 p.m.
