HANOVER, N.H.—Dartmouth volleyball opened homecoming weekend on Friday night at Leede Arena. The Big Green fell in three sets to Princeton to start the weekend.
Set One (L, 25-16)
The Tigers took the first point of the match and never let go of the lead in the opening set. Princeton took an early 7-1 but the run was stopped by a Maddie LaFata kill. Dartmouth continued to battle in opening set as Princeton held a 15-9 lead at the media timeout. Princeton came out of the timeout and raced out to a 23-13 lead which forced a Dartmouth timeout. Despite the timeout, the Tigers took the first set 25-16.
LaFata led Dartmouth with five kills on seven attacks in the opening set while Kauany Gutz had a trio of kills. EllaMae Fitzgerald tallied eight digs in the opening set while also having a team high 11 receptions. Ellie Mattox had a team high seven assists in the opening set while Sophia Gagnepain had five assists. Sophia Zanca teamed up with Zori Brown and Gutz for a pair of blocks in the first set.
Set Two (L, 25-23)
The second set was the closest of the three sets on Friday as there were six ties and two lead changes. After 20 points in the set, the teams were tied at 10 as the teams looked to take the second set. At the media timeout, the Tigers held a slight 15-13 lead. Out of the timeout, Princeton took an 18-14 lead which led to a Big Green timeout. Dartmouth responded by cutting the lead to 21-19 which forced a Princeton timeout. Despite a second Dartmouth timeout, the Tigers took the set 25-23.
Gutz had a set high eight kills as she had a .667 hitting percentage. Both LaFata and Brown had two kills while Molly Power also had a kill. Gagnepain had eight assists to lead Dartmouth, both Fitzgerald and Mattox had two assists. The Big Green had two blocks in the set as Power, LaFata, Ava Roberts, and Raeli Smith each had a block assist. Brown led the Big Green with five digs in the set while Fitzgerald was right behind her with three. Brown, Gagnepain, and Smith each had service ace in the set.
Set Three (L, 25-15)
The start of the third set saw the two teams battling, after the first 10 points the set was tied at five. Despite the early ties, the Tigers jumped out to a 14-9 lead as Dartmouth took its first timeout. The timeout did not phase Princeton as they held a six-point lead when Dartmouth took its second timeout of the set. Princeton took five of the next seven points to close out the match.
Brown notched three kills in the set while both Gutz and LaFata had two, Power added a kill as well. Both Mattox and Fitzgerald had three digs while Gagnepain and LaFata each had a pair. The first-year duo of Brown and McCreery teamed up the lone Dartmouth block of the set.
Gutz notched 13 kills in the loss, it is the seventh time this season that the Big Green senior had tallied double digit kills. LaFata had nine kills while Brown had six, Power had four kills, Irmak Makasci had one kill. Fitzgerald had a team high 14 digs while Brown (eight), Mattox (five), Makasci (four), and Power all had multiple digs. The Big Green had six service aces with both Brown and Gagnepain having two.
The Big Green close out homecoming weekend on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 5 PM against Penn at Leede Arena.
