HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team made history in more ways than one during its 1-0 victory over Columbia. As the final seconds ran down, Dartmouth secured its first win over Columbia since 2014, and its first home victory over the Lions since 2013.
Taylor Schram, the Stacy Branca '94 Head Coach of Women's Soccer, said the energy at Burnham Field was noticeably different for this game. She said she knew the players felt this energy going into the match, and as soon as they stepped onto the field.
"I think our girls brought it from the opening whistle on both sides of the ball, and I'm just really proud of the performance and super excited. This one feels really good," Schram said. "I know it's going to give us some momentum for the weeks to come."
The opening 45 minutes were a back-and-forth battle between the Ivy League rivals, with the Big Green outshooting the Lions 11-3 and each goalkeeper tallying one save. Despite each team's efforts, the game went scoreless into halftime.
First-year midfielder Nadia Young had the game-deciding moment in the 70th minute when she scored her first career goal off an assist from junior midfielder Frankie Valverde.
Young said in the moment, she blanked, but it felt like the best feeling in the world once she realized what had happened. She said she was really concentrated and focused on helping her team in the best way she could.
"Obviously scoring the goal was great, but I think I'm mostly proud of the effort that we put in defensively because that is just as important," Young said. "So just the team effort in general was just awesome, and I'm just very grateful to be on the field with such amazing players as well."
With the victory, the Big Green have the top spot in the Ivy League rankings. Valverde reflected on her time over the past three years, explaining that it is an unreal feeling to see Dartmouth at the top of the league.
"I think this team has been working so hard the past few years to kind of reshape our program, and I truly think our hard work and just cohesion off the field and on the field is just something so special," Valverde said. "So to finally feel like it's paying off is just such a good feeling."
The Big Green will continue Ivy League play next Saturday when they travel to Providence, R.I., to face Brown at 4:30 p.m.
