Big Green Wrap Up Week Three of Spring Camp

The spring game is set for Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m.
HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth football team has wrapped up its third week of spring practice, with just one week until the spring game. The Big Green continue to focus on consistency from practice to practice while establishing foundational pieces that will translate to the fall.
One new face for the Big Green since last fall is offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shane Montgomery, a veteran coach of decades in the college ranks.
"The transition has been good," he said. "I've been here going on three months right now. I've been really pleased with the way the guys have accepted me and the way they've blended together and put this offense together."
One of Montgomery's initial focuses was getting to know the student-athletes.
He was impressed from the get-go.
"The thing I recognized really early was the culture of the program," he said. "First of all, we've got great kids, and they carry themselves the right way every day. I saw that in the winter workouts when I first got here."
"I saw the way that they interacted as a team," he continued. "This is really a team atmosphere."
That team atmosphere has allowed for competitive practices where in the trenches, the student-athletes are pushing each other to be great.
Montgomery from the beginning could tell the Big Green were, as he put it, "well-developed."
Development happens all year, in so many areas and ways, including the spring
"They had done a great job in the weight room, and they've carried it over on the field," said Montgomery.
Offensively, the Big Green lose quarterback Jackson Proctor to graduation, but return Grayson Saunier, who impressed in his time last fall. He's among multiple talented quarterbacks on the current roster.
The story with other positions is similar; Dartmouth is losing significant pieces on offense and defense, but also returns plenty of experience and younger guys poised to step into more prominent roles.
"There's a good nucleus of guys who did play and have played in the past, along with a lot of talented young guys, and they're getting a lot of reps right now," said Montgomery. "We're able to go two full groups. We've been healthy on offense, which has been good because most of them have been out here all practices, and they're doing a great job."
Montgomery and the entire Big Green coaching staff is focused on implementing things that will carry forward.
"We're going to try to get in as much offense as we can, but we're not going to just put plays in to put plays in," he said. "We're going to get some things in that we think will carry over through the season. We're going to get our base offense in, along with some situational football. And those are some things that the kids can really work on when they're working on their own this summer."
Remember what Montgomery could initially tell about the Dartmouth football program?
Player leadership, which is something that will prove important beyond the spring.
"There's not as much we can do in the summer, so they've got to do a good job [player-leadership wise] with what we're doing right now," said Montgomery. "Making sure when we start in the middle of August, we're ready to go."
