Football Off to Strong Start in Preseason Camp

HANOVER, N.H. — After kicking off practice last Saturday, the Dartmouth football team has made strong strides as the Big Green prepare for the 2025 season, which opens on Saturday, Sept. 20 vs. New Hampshire at home.
"Each day, we've gotten better," said Sammy McCorkle, Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach. "The older guys are really starting to understand everything, and it allows us to put some more time into the second and third groups, and those guys are coming along as well."
McCorkle called the energy level so far very "business like."
"I feel like our players are coming out here prepared and ready to go," said McCorkle. "If we ask them to be all in for an hour and a half or two hours, they're all in, and they've done a good job. They've done a good job of taking care of each other as well, but playing fast at the same time."
Both the offense and defense have had their moments, which is expected, but the great thing about camp so far is the opposite side has always seemed to respond within the same practice, never mind the following day.
"One side may not come out and do as well, but they have learned to forget about that and move on," said McCorkle. "Just like a game, you may not play great in the first half, but you've got to learn from it and be ready to come out in the second half and play. Both sides have done that."
Consistency is one area of focus for McCorkle and the Big Green heading into another busy week, which includes the first scrimmage of camp set for Wednesday morning.
"We have to be more consistent," he said. "The thing is somebody's to win. But the good thing is we're going back and forth; it's not a one-sided situation at all."
The season opener is less than three weeks away, when the Big Green host in-state rival UNH on Saturday, Sept. 20. The Ivy League opener is two weeks later, on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Penn.
