Haughton’s Setback Leads to New Perspective

After Daniel Haughton suffered a season-ending Achilles injury late in the September 27 game at Central Connecticut State, he knew he could still impact the Dartmouth football team in a positive way.
What would follow has been a true test of Haughton's leadership and character.
"As disappointing as the injury was, it did offer a new perspective on things," said Haughton. "Regardless of whether I was playing or not, I was still a captain and still had a duty as a leader.
"If I had sulked, that would have given leeway to the rest of the room to do the same," Haughton continued. "I didn't want the fact that I was on a scooter and couldn't walk change how I showed up and approached the task at hand. I showed up to meetings five minutes early, showed up with a notepad, asked questions and was vocal in the meeting room."
Haughton came to see football from a different perspective. Offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery spoke to Haughton's off-field impact.
"Daniel was a big loss on the field, but he was still at every practice and coaching up the receivers every day," he said. "On game days, he was up in the box with me seeing things, pointing things out and making suggestions."
With Haughton's on-field ability, coupled with his newfound outlook, he has unfinished business.
Haughton is graduating from Dartmouth, then hopes to play two more years of college football elsewhere.
"Going into this past season, my goal was to be the best receiver I possibly could, which if I'm playing at my best, I believe I'm able to compete with any guys in any league at a really high level," he said. "That was always the goal, and I wasn't able to do it this year, but that doesn't mean the chance to do it is over.
"I believe this is just a minor setback, and I will play again."
Setbacks pave the way for comebacks.
Football as an Avenue to Education
Haughton started playing football, and getting serious about the sport, from an early age. He saw his brother Darius playing and Daniel's competitiveness came to the surface.
"I wanted to be better than Darius," he said. "In the second grade, I played up. There wasn't a second-grade league, so I was playing third and fourth graders, and I was decent. In third grade, I was still playing up.
"From that point on, I thought I could use football as an avenue to get to college."
Haughton was at a big public middle school in North Carolina where he played quarterback.
"Then, I transferred to a private high school where I switched to wide receiver and safety," he said. "I thought I was going to be a safety in college. Junior year is when I became sure I was better at receiver than safety… and that's when I really started getting recruited by schools."
Haughton's first offer came from in-state, which he loved and appreciated, but it was too close to home for his liking. He went on to enjoy a great senior year, which led to numerous FCS offers, one of which was Dartmouth.
"Coach Shula (wide receiver coach at the time) and Coach Teevens (late great Big Green head coach) were phenomenal recruiters," said Haughton. "They gave me a bunch of insight on the Dartmouth community. They were also reigning back-to-back Ivy champs, so it seemed like a no-brainer to me.
"I cancelled my visit to Penn and committed to Dartmouth."
The Dartmouth Experience
As to be expected, Haughton's adjustment to college wasn't easy, but he adjusted.
"The school piece was difficult, but not too difficult as my high school was pretty hard," he said.
Meanwhile, football was a huge adjustment.
"You get to college, and everyone who is playing football at the Division I level was the best player on their high school team," said Haughton. "My freshman fall camp, I did well, but I was also constantly nervous and constantly filled with self-doubt."
Haughton's older teammates assured what he was feeling was part of the process of learning and growing.
Haughton stayed focusing on studying the plays and doing extra work to put himself in the best position to succeed.
His time would come…
The Turning Point(s)
With Haughton's work ethic, he consistently felt increasingly comfortable over the course of his career.
But that feeling outside of football reached another level after his sophomore summer.
"I had been 'on' seven out of eight terms going into my sophomore summer, which not a lot of people do," said Haughton.
At the time, Haughton was feeling some burnout, but used the summer to step away, refresh and re-energize.
"My sophomore summer featured a lot of self-reflection," he said. "I was taking these hard classes, but intermingled with a bunch of people who I'd never met before. It wasn't athletes, but philosophy majors and economics majors. It's a different aspect of life. That was the moment when I was like this is Dartmouth; this is my environment.
"I had arrived and was able to settle in."
Haughton became comfortable in the overall scope of Dartmouth: the athletics, the academics and the campus. He went on to enjoy a breakout junior season, leading the Big Green in receiving yards (428). Against Harvard, he had a 72-yard touchdown catch, which was a turning point that helped turn a good season into a great season.
Two games later, Haughton eclipsed 100 yards for the first time, tallying six receptions for 101 yards at Cornell.
Haughton was named a team captain in the spring and looked primed for an even better senior campaign.
Setbacks Pave the Way for Comebacks
Haughton was off to a strong start in 2025, making five catches in the season opener against New Hampshire, then six for 68 yards at Central Connecticut State. Late in that game is when he got hurt on a seemingly innocent play at the corner of the end zone.
The result was a season-ending Achilles injury.
For Haughton, that day was a reminder to never take anything for granted.
"At any moment in time, you can get injured and your season can be over," said Haughton. "Every little play, every little practice, every little moment — like when I do get to play again — I will cherish because you never know when that moment will end."
That Saturday at Central Connecticut State was also very hot and led to another scary moment.
"I was with my family after the game on crutches and I passed out for a little bit of time," said Haughton. "I had never passed out before. Being unconscious without knowing is one of the scariest things I've ever dealt with. There were people who saw me completely knocked out, and I have no recollection of that moment."
That day was certainly a setback on a number of fronts, but also the start of Haughton's comeback.
"That day is giving me its own perspective that I really shouldn't fear anything," he said. "Going into games, sometimes I'd be nervous, I'd be timid and I'd get nervous about making a play. But I don't have that anymore."
That lack of fear came into play when Haughton was asked to speak at homecoming this fall.
"Being selected as captain in general is a huge honor; it shows a level of respect from your teammates, from the coaches and from the staff," said Haughton. "It shows that your work is being recognized. Speaking in front of homecoming is something you can never prepare for. I saw Nick Howard do it when I was a freshman and never thought I would be up there.
"As I was scooting up to the platform, I'm thinking, 'I tore my Achilles and had surgery, and I passed out,'" he continued. "This is nothing compared to that."
On the Way Back
In the grand scheme of things, Haughton's road to recovery is also nothing compared to what he has already gone through. In the midst of the recovery process, he is learning something new about himself every day.
"Every day, I'm faced with a new challenge, but it's important to just keep moving forward," he said. "I had so many big goals going into the season, so much I wanted to do, but now the focus is the little wins and what I can do to win each day."
As Haughton continues his recovery with an eye on playing football somewhere in 2026 (and 2027), that perspective will continue to serve him well.
"If you get too caught up on making the big play, you won't make it if you don't do the little details to get there," he said. "It segues perfectly, because it really is all about little wins now — like being able to walk, being able to put pressure on my Achilles or being able to do a calf raise.
"All those little details add up and build up to eventually being able to run, then being able to play again."
When Haughton does play again, his leadership will shine through even brighter.
"He stayed full engaged, which can be hard for someone with a season-ending injury," said Sammy McCorkle, Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach. "It's hard to know where you fit in the program [after the injury]. But he did a phenomenal job of finding the time and place when to be that leader and not allowing that injury to push him behind the scenes."
A young wide receiver room needed that mentorship and Haughton rose to the challenge.
"Daniel stepped up to help mentor those guys, hold those guys accountable and continue to let them know what the expectation and level of play needed to be," said McCorkle.
Haughton's daily mindset has helped him get through every day for the last few months.
"When I woke up this morning, I knew there may be setbacks, but I had to win the day," he said.
That's all Haughton has done. Stack wins together, day after day, in all areas of his life.
The Dartmouth chapter may be coming to an end for Haughton, but his story certainly isn't finished.
