HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's tennis played their final two matches of the regular season this weekend, hosting Cornell and Columbia inside Boss Tennis Center.
The Big Green split the weekend, earning a 4-0 win over the Big Red on Saturday before falling to the Lions, 4-0, on Sunday.
Match 1: Dartmouth 4, Cornell 0
In the first match of the weekend, the Big Green cruised to an impressive 4-0 win over Cornell, snapping a four-match losing skid against the Big Red.
Josephine Lombardi and
Elise Wong were paired at third doubles, cruising to a 6-1 victory.
Peyton Capuano and
Michela Moore's first doubles matchup finished next, as the juniors fell to Cornell's Ryndin and Loudon, 6-3.
The Big Green's second doubles pairing,
Sam Grosjean and
Alexandra Orlins secured the doubles point for Dartmouth, posting a 6-4 win to give the Big Green the lead headed into singles play.
Dartmouth cruised through singles play, winning its first three matches to secure the 4-0 victory over the Big Red.
At second singles, Moore earned her 50
th career singles win, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-1.
Lombardi posted an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win at sixth singles to pull the Big Green within one match of the win.
At first singles, Capuano posted a 6-3 first set victory before earning the victory in a tiebreak. Capuano won the tiebreak 8-6, clinching the second set 7-6 and overall match victory for the Big Green.
Orlins' third single match,
Lauren Han's fourth singles match, and Grosjean's fifth singles match all went unfinished after Capuano clinched the win. Orlins dropped the first set 6-3, won the second set 6-1, and was winning 5-2 in the third set when her match was called. Han won her first set 6-4, dropped the second set, and was trailing 5-2 in the third set. Grosjean was playing in a thriller, having earned the first set victory in a tiebreaker, 7-4, 7-6. Her and Cornell's Martinez were in the middle of a second set tiebreaker when their match was called.
Match 2: Columbia 4, Dartmouth 0
In Sunday's regular season finale, the Big Green won one doubles match and had three singles match play into a third set, but Dartmouth fell to the Lions, 4-0.
Josephine Lombardi and
Elise Wong's third doubles match was the first to conclude, as the pair fell 6-3.
Sam Grosjean and
Alexandra Orlins improved their weekend doubles record to 2-0, defeating their opponents 6-2.
Peyton Capuano and
Michela Moore fell at first doubles to Columbia's Krishnan and Lin, 7-5, as the Lions earned the doubles point and took the lead into singles play.
The Lions impressed in singles, winning the first three matches to clinch the win over the Big Green. Lombardi's sixth singles match wrapped first, as she fell 6-3, 6-2.
Orlins' played at third singles, ultimately falling 6-4, 6-3. The match concluded when Columbia won the matchup at fourth singles, as
Lauren Han fell to the Lions' Li. Han put up a fight, as she fell in the first set, 7-5, before forcing a tiebreak in the second set, ultimately dropping 7-5, 7-6.
Capuano at first singles, Moore at second singles and Grosjean at fifth singles all had their matches go unfinished. Capuano won the first set, 7-5, dropped the second set and was trailing 4-2 in the third set when her match was called. Moore lost her first set but powered back to a 6-0 second set victory. She was winning 5-2 in the third when the match was called. At fifth singles, Grosjean just won the second set tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6, and took an early 1-0 third set lead when Columbia secured the victory.
As the Big Green's regular season comes to an end, Capuano led the way through the spring season with a 13-4 record at first singles. Across both the fall and spring seasons, Orlins earned the most singles wins, claiming 14 as a first-year.
In doubles play, Capuano and Moore impressed with a 15-5 record at first doubles. Orlins also went 15-5 throughout the course of the spring season, finishing her first full year in green with a 20-7 doubles record.
