Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their “Sophomore Summers.”
This installment features Carly Tower of the volleyball team. The 6-3 middle blocker from Windermere, Florida, had a great season in 2017 and was first on the team in block assists (86) and total blocks (94), and second in kills (133). Her 1.12 blocks per set in a season has her first in the all-time record book, while her 94 total blocks puts her second all-time.
DartmouthSports.com: What is your favorite place on campus?
Carly Tower: The Tower Room in the library is absolutely my favorite place on campus. It was one of the first places I saw when I first visited Dartmouth. I feel a special connection to the room considering my last name is Tower, but more than that, it is exactly what I imagined an Ivy League library would look like. It’s too hot for me to spend much time there this summer, but I love curling up in the big chairs up there in the late fall and winter and looking out over the Green.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
CT: My sister, Chloe, is the person I admire most in my life. She is a year younger than I am, and she attends Samford University and is a theatre major. Our personalities and interests could not be more different, but she is my best friend. She is the strongest person I know. She is so wise and compassionate, and she is absolutely her own person. She has had the greatest influence on my life through her selflessness, loyalty and for making me laugh like no one else does.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
CT: I instantly fell in love with the campus. It is a quintessential New England college, which I absolutely love. It feels like how I always imagined college would feel. I was also sold by how much everyone who attended Dartmouth loved it. The whole community bleeds green, and I love that everyone involved with the college is excited about being here.
DS: What has been your best on-court memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
CT: In our last home match last fall against Princeton, I had one of my favorite plays of my Dartmouth career. In the second set, I was running a slide, and hit the ball square off the Princeton defender’s face! The game was delayed for quite a bit as the trainers and opposing coaches evaluated her. It was a play that really helped our team’s momentum, but was also one of those plays that you live for as a hitter. Our team won that match, 3-2, to close out the season, and the whole game was such an incredible team effort that I was honored to be a part of.
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
CT: I think I would pick Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Though he’s a male, I feel that we have similar personalities: we love to work hard, we love our families, and we’re both kind of awkwardly funny. I also love that he began his career as an athlete. He’s one of my favorite actors to watch in movies, and though my life is definitely not as action-packed as his movies tend to be, it’d be fun to watch him play me. I also love when he stars alongside Kevin Hart, which is why, if I had to choose someone to play my sister in the movie of my life, I would pick Hart.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it you and why?
CT: My favorite nickname on my team is "Split" which was given to me by my fellow ‘20s, specifically Corinne Cox. It comes from the fact that she and I began a tradition of splitting food at FOCO, and Split has stuck ever since. Every time I hear my teammates yell that nickname on the court, in the weight room or around campus, I can’t help but laugh a little.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
CT: I grew up in Orlando, Florida, which is very different than Hanover. Hanover is mountainous, experiences all four seasons, is full of outdoor activities to enjoy. Orlando is flat, has two seasons (hot and hotter), and has Disney World and Universal. I absolutely loved growing up in Orlando, but I am loving my time in Hanover as well (except for the winters). It’s been nice to cool off, experience the beautiful falls and springs in New England, and explore the outdoors a little more.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
CT: If I could play another sport at Dartmouth, I would love to be on the crew team. When I work out on my own, I really enjoy using the erg machines. I think my body type is also well suited for the sport. It would definitely be a challenge, and would be very different from my own sport, but I think it would be so fun to give it a try!
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
CT: I would love to work in the front office for a professional sports team! I always knew I would want to stay close to the sports world, as sports have been such an influential part of my life for as long as I can remember. Working in the front office for a professional sports team would allow me to combine my passion for athletics with the ability to help create a culture within an organization.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
CT: The best piece of advice I would give to my 15-year-old self is that the plans God has for me are so much greater than those that I have for myself. For example, when I was 15, I had planned out where I thought I wanted to go to college, what I wanted to study, and how I thought my life would look. I suffered a major knee injury when I was 16, which drastically changed many of those plans I had for myself but allowed me to see more clearly what God’s plans were for me. Though I learned these things through a hardship, I wouldn’t have learned them any other way. I am so thankful for the way things turned out because God led me exactly to where I am supposed to be. I would definitely advise myself to trust Him and to hold on to my confidence, because it will certainly pay off.
