Among the many reasons that Dartmouth has such a tremendous cross country program is that the athletes have wonderful places to train and compete. The area around Hanover is filled with wooded trails that are ideal for distance running.
For specific training, the Hanover Country Club, owned by Dartmouth College, is a fantastic place for hill, fartlek and interval training. The coaches can put together loops of virtually any distance, and make them as flat and fast, or as hilly and challenging as they would like.
For races, the competitive cross country course is 5 miles for men and 5 K for women. The course takes full advantage of the golf course, as well as a picturesque trail along the Connecticut river. This is not an easy course, and the several hills always give an advantage to the Big Green athletes.
The course is the site of the annual Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational every September, where hundreds of collegiate athletes gather to test the Big Green in their season opener.
