After returning to his alma mater in the fall of 2017 as the offensive quality control coach, Cavanaugh was promoted to an assistant coach overseeing the nickelbacks for the 2018 campaign. Under Cavanaugh’s tutelage, Kyran McKinney-Crudden led the Big Green with 69 tackles and earned a spot on the All-Ivy League First Team. The fifth-year senior also intercepted a pass, broke up three others, recovered two fumbles and forced one as well.
In 2019, he mentored senior D.J. Avery and sophomore John Pupel at the position, who combined to bring down 79 opponents on a defense that ranked second nationally in points allowed and seven in pass efficiency defense.
A two-sport athlete for the Big Green, he played football throughout his career, though injuries kept him from reaching his full potential on the field. Cavanaugh was also an outfielder on the baseball team as a freshman.
