Brian Small completed his first season as an assistant men's lacrosse coach at Dartmouth in 2016.
Small came to Hanover from University Heights, Ohio, where he served as the head lacrosse coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks’ first two seasons as a varsity program.
The inaugural season was highlighted by 10 wins in the squad's first 11 games on the way to an appearance in the OAC Tournament Championship game, wrapping things up with a record of 13-4. Last year's team won nine games and made another tournament appearance. John Carroll is the only program in OAC history to advance to the conference tournament in the first two seasons of program existence.
Before arriving in Ohio, Small was the assistant coach at Quinnipiac, serving as defensive coordinator for two years. He helped lead the Bobcats to a regular season title and an NEC Championship appearance in 2011 and, in 2012, the team had a man down defense that was ranked eighth in Division I. Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator at Sacred Heart (08/09-08/10) and the face off coordinator at Ohio Wesleyan (09/08-05/09). While coaching at Ohio Wesleyan, the team made an appearance in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Small received a degree in Sports Management from Ohio Wesleyan in 2005. During his four years as a Battling Bishop, he led the team in ground balls (2004, 2005), and was an NCAC First Team All-Conference selection and a USILA All-American. Ohio Wesleyan won four straight NCAC Conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during his time there. As a senior, he was selected to play in the North/South Senior All-Star Game. He went on to play Major League Lacrosse for the Baltimore Bayhawks (2006).
