Matt Dugan wrapped up his fourth year as Dartmouth assistant coach in 2023.
In Dugan’s time, the Big Green increased their win total every year (excluding the one game played in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), capped off by 2023 when they went 6-6. It marked Dartmouth’s most wins, and first time at .500 or better overall, since 2008. One of the nonleague highlights was a thrilling 20-16 comeback win at Hobart, as the Big Green erased a 7-1 first-half deficit to beat the Statesmen for the first time since 1995. Dartmouth also handed Hobart its first-ever loss in the Thomas B. Poole ’61 and Family Sports Dome. Later in March, the Big Green came back to beat Harvard, 10-9 in overtime, for their first Ivy League victory since 2015. In every week of March, Dartmouth was receiving national votes in the USILA Coaches Poll and Inside Lacrosse/Media Poll.
Among numerous roles, Dugan coached the faceoff unit, which included Mitchell Myers, a two-time All-Ivy honoree and 2023 Inside Lacrosse Midseason all-American Mitchell Myers. Named first team All-Ivy in 2022 and to the second team in 2023, Myers became the first Big Green student-athlete with a first team and second team All-Ivy honor on his resume since Casey Hingtgen in 2009 and 2010. Myers finished the 2023 regular season second in the Ivy League in faceoff percentage (56.1), which was also a career high (after winning 55.4 percent in 2022). Myers also collected a career-high 83 groundballs. That total, and his 6.92 groundballs per game, were good for second in the Ivy League.
Dugan also worked with the defense, which saw fifth-year Peter Rizzotti be named NEILA All-New England Second Team in 2023 after returning from injury. He led the Big Green in caused turnovers (23) in 2023, graduating as the program’s all-time leader for a career (64) and season (27 in 2019). In Dugan’s time, defenseman Andrew Johnston was also named honorable mention All-Ivy while goaltender Daniel Hincks was named second team All-Ivy and an honorable mention All-American in 2022.
In 2023, Dartmouth began the season 4-0 for its best start since 2003 and was one of just two undefeated teams in the nation in mid-March (the other being eventual National Champion Notre Dame). In 2022, the Big Green started 4-1 and came ever-so close to breaking through in the Ivy League. In a season that saw six Ivy League teams advance to the NCAA Tournament, the Big Green fell to eventual national finalist Cornell, 8-7, in a game they were leading until 6:23 remaining and tied until 3:08 on the clock. Dartmouth later dropped a 12-10 final at No. 3 Princeton, who would also advance to the Final Four, in a game the Big Green were leading early in the fourth quarter. In addition, Dartmouth dropped a 16-12 final to a Penn team that went on to be seeded in the NCAA Tournament.
From 2020-23, Dugan helped Dartmouth post a strong 13-5 record in nonleague play.
Prior to arriving in Hanover, Dugan spent two years as an assistant coach at Bucknell. While there, he assisted with the defensive game plan, created and organized scouting reports, and assisted with scheduling and travel. In 2018, the team was named regular season Patriot League champion and was ranked as high as No. 10 in the USILA and Inside Lacrosse polls, owning wins at No. 6 Loyola and No. 3 Yale.
Prior to arriving in Lewisburg, Dugan served as an assistant coach at Tampa for three seasons, helping the Spartans reach the NCAA Division II Tournament semifinal in 2016 and 2017.
Beginning in December of 2016, Dugan served as the Director of Player Analytics for the Florida Launch, a Major League Lacrosse club. He was the first person to work exclusively in analytics for the Launch.
A three-year starter and primary face off man at Marist, Dugan graduated in 2013 with a degree in business and finance.
