Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2024 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on
Grace Faulkner of the women's soccer. A native of Barrington, Rhode Island, Faulkner started all 15 games in the backline for the Big Green during the 2021 season.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Grace Faulkner: Working out, trying to get ready for preseason. I have been running, lifting and playing pick-up soccer with a bunch of players on the men's and women's soccer team, men's club and anyone who is interested. I've also been hanging out with friends. Hanover is beautiful this summer and I have been spending a lot of time outside. My friends and I have been going down to the docks and river on the Dartmouth campus where we can swim, paddle board and canoe. I am taking two classes this term, Computational Inverse Problems and Sex, Gender, and Society. I am also participating in DRIVE as well which is a leadership program provided to athletes at Dartmouth.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
GF: The soccer fields - I love going down to any of the soccer fields with friends or by myself to run or play soccer. However, Burnham, our home field, is my favorite place because of all the energy that comes from being and playing on that field. As a whole, we have a nicely kept grass field outside and when it is cold or raining, we have a brand new indoor space where we can play as well.
DS: What was it in the recruiting proved that sold you on Dartmouth?
GF: Facilities, teammates, coaches, and the campus. I love Floren and the equipment that is offered to us in there is amazing. I also love the fields since they are grass and not turf. I love the girls that I talked to when I came up for my visit. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. They seemed to really care about team culture while all pushing themselves and their teammates to be the best. The coaches were extremely nice while still showing they had high expectations for the team. They proved to me that this culture was something that I could not only contribute to and be a part of, but also enjoy. When I got to campus on my visit, it seemed like everyone was playing spike ball on the green, going swimming in the river, and really enjoying the outdoors. This made me really want to come to Dartmouth because it seemed like a lot of fun and everyone seemed to be friends with each other.
DS: If you could play another spot at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
GF: I played a lot of different sports growing up but if I had to pick which one to play in college other than soccer, I would probably play either hockey or volleyball. I played IM hockey this past winter and I really enjoyed it. Additionally, I play volleyball with my friends all the time and we love it. They're both really competitive and fun sports.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
GF: My club coach growing up, Nick Burke, helped transform my soccer game and opened the world of soccer to me. He pushed me to be better and be the best.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
GF: My sophomore fall we traveled down to Georgetown and tied them 1-1. The reason that it is my best on-field memory is because I felt like it was one of my best games where I finally relaxed and played like a leader. Additionally, as a team we were playing together where every single person was giving 100%, no matter if they were on the field or on the field sideline cheering – the energy was unmatched.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
GF: I grew up in Rhode Island which has a lot more beaches and water than Hanover. However, I've come to love the river and mountains. Both have great outdoor activities with great communities and friendly people – not too crowded.
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
GF: Spotify. I listen to a lot of music – recently I have been listening to a lot of Drake's new album, Chief Keef, and Dominic Fike.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
GF: Greece. This is somewhere I have always wanted to go because I am really interested in their culture and history. Additionally, it looks beautiful and it has been on my bucket list since I was really young.
