A proven recruiter and winner at all levels, Mary Gleason is in her third season at Dartmouth, having already helped the Big Green to Ivy League Championships in each of her first two years on the sideline. In the 2008-09 season, she helped the Dartmouth women to an 18-11 overall record and an impressive 13-1 mark in Ivy play, earning the program’s 17th Ivy Championship and an NCAA Tournament bid.
In addition to serving as Dartmouth’s recruiting coordinator, Gleason plays an integral role coaching the guards and scouting opponents, an area of expertise for the former point guard.
During two seasons in Hanover, Gleason has helped mentor seven All-Ivy honorees including two-time first team All-Ivy guard Koren Schram ’09 and 2009 Player of the Year, Brittney Smith ’11. In her first season at Dartmouth, Gleason helped the Big Green to a share of its 16th Ivy crown and a spot in the Women’s NIT.
Gleason arrived at Dartmouth in the summer of 2007 after two successful stints at Princeton and New York University.
“Mary Gleason is a pro. She knows basketball and the Ivy League,” noted Head Coach Chris Wielgus at the time of Gleason’s hiring. “Her work at Princeton speaks volumes — the players loved her and she left the place in very good shape. Basically, she was a pain in the neck to compete against, and in the athletic world that is a good thing. I am happy to have her on our sideline now.”
In four years at Princeton (2003-07), Gleason helped the Tigers to a share of the 2006 Ivy crown and recruited and coached multiple All-Ivy and All-Rookie honorees.
Prior to her appointment at Princeton, Gleason spent three years at NYU, a perennial Top-10 Division III program. During her time there, she helped NYU to a 79-15 record and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, while coordinating national recruiting efforts.
A 1995 graduate of Southern Methodist, Gleason was a standout player for the Mustangs. After joining the team as a walk-on, Gleason became her team’s starting point guard and captain, earning All-Southwest Conference honors. Gleason set the SMU career record for three-pointers made and currently ranks second on that list. She also ranks fifth on the Mustangs career three-point attempts list and third in career three-point percentage.
During her time at SMU, the Mustangs advanced to the WNIT Championship game in 1993 followed by back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program’s first tournament win in 1995. Dartmouth brought Gleason back home during the 2008-09 campaign when the Big Green lost at Southern Methodist on a last-second play.
Gleason also played basketball professionally for Division I teams in Switzerland and Spain from 1997-2000. She spent one season as an assistant coach at Cowley Community College in Arkansas City, Kan., has coached at a variety of camps including Duke University and was an AAU coach for five years.
A native of Pasadena, Texas, Gleason has seven brothers — six older and one younger. She graduated from Southern Methodist in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in history and a teaching certification.
