PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - Brown went 95 yards in the final two minutes of the game for a 26-21 victory over Dartmouth in Ivy League football action Saturday.
The Big Green's four-game win streak went by the boards when Bear running back Nick Hartigan bulled over from one yard out with 31 seconds on the clock.
Dartmouth took a 21-14 lead when Casey Cramer caught his second touchdown pass of the game with 10:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Brown, 4-5 overall, 3-3 Ivy League, answered when Hartigan blasted up the middle from 25 yards out with 6:50 to play. Dartmouth retained the lead at 21-20 when the Bear kicker's PAT caromed wide off the right upright.
Hartigan, who became Brown's all-time leading rusher in the game, finished with 194 yards on 38 carries.
That negated an outstanding day by Cramer who finished with 10 grabs for 137 yards and 2 TDs. His first touchdown came with only four seconds left in the second quarter.
With the ball on the Bear 25 yard line, sophomore quarterback Charlie Rittgers threw to Cramer in the left corner of the end zone for a 14-6 advantage at halftime.
"We had opportunities," said Dartmouth coach John Lyons. "Give them credit. They had to go 95 yards into the wind.
"We couldn't run the ball effectively all day, and it really hurt us," added Lyons. "We left too much time on the clock at the end."
Brown finished with 537 yards of total offense and held more than a 10-minute advantage in time of possession. Although Rittgers completed 19 passes for 218 yards, the Big Green could only rush for 102 yards. Tops in that department was junior tailback Chris Little who earned 74 yards on 18 carries.
"We were complacent on offense," said Cramer. "From that standpoint, we really didn't execute the way we should."
Dartmouth, 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the League, closes the 2003 season at home next Saturday, hosting the Princeton Tigers at Memorial Field. Kickoff is 12:30 p.m.
