Cambridge, Mass. - Kevin Du scored two goals and two assists to lead Harvard past the Dartmouth men's hockey team, 6-2, in the first ECAC Hockey League game of the season. The Crimson scored three unanswered goals in the third period in a sold-out Bright Center tonight in Cambridge, Mass.
After the first period the two teams went into the break with a 1-1 tie. Dartmouth jumped on the board first, just :58 into the game. On a 2-on-1 break by the Big Green,
J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) and Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) connected on the give-and-go for the 1-0 Dartmouth lead.
The lead held until 16:39 when Harvard freshman Jack Christian received the puck from a throw in on the right point for the equalizer.
Dartmouth struck quickly again in the second, just :32 in.
Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) had the shot from the point as the puck was tipped in by a Harvard skater.
Another tying goal by Harvard just five seconds into a Dartmouth penalty made the score 2-2. Du won the faceoff as the pass was tipped by Dylan Reese. Harvard took its first lead when Du went 1-on-1 with Rob Jarvis (Ottawa, Ont.) and beat Dartmouth netminder Sean Samuel (Mississauga, Ont.) down low.
Harvard poured it on the in final stanza scoring three unanswered goals. Nick Coskren scored on a rebound at 1:59 before Dave Watters and Dan Murphy put exclamation points on the night chasing Samuel from the net.
Despite outshooting Harvard through the first two periods, the teams were tied in shots at 22-apiece. The Crimson capitalized on its power play opportunities going 2-for-4 while Dartmouth was 0-for-3.
Samuel (0-1) ended the night with 13 saves and
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) had three. John Daigneau (1-0) in the net for Harvard had 20 saves.
"They played better than us," said Dartmouth head coach
Bob Gaudet. "It was a good effort by them. We played great for two period and held them to nine shots but after giving up that fourth goal we had to open the game up a little bit and be a little more agressive and it cost us."
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend with league contests at Princeton, November 4 and Quinnipiac on November 5.
