Junior Alicia Petryk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) hit a single up the middle to drive in the winning run for the Dartmouth softball team giving the Big Green its first win of 2005. The single gave Dartmouth a 3-2 victory over St. Mary's College in the Spartan Classic at San Jose State University.
The Gaels scored first with an unearned run in the top of the third inning. The Big Green answered on an RBI double from sophomore Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) in the bottom of the frame, knotting the game at 1.
St. Mary's scored another run in the top of the next inning giving the Gaels a 2-1 lead until Petryk's heroics in the bottom of the seventh.
The frame started with senior Kerry Conway (Leominster, Mass.) knocking a one out single before junior Jess Reiten (Santa Ana, Calif.) had her own single to move Conway to second. Fry then hit a double to center field, knocking in Conway. Senior Jodee Thompson (Carmichael, Calif.) walked to load the bases. Then Petryk on an 0-2 count drove a single up the middle to knock in Reiten for the winning run.
On the mound freshman Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) went all seven innings to earn her first collegiate win. She gave up seven hits while striking out seven and walking one.
The Big Green earned 10 hits on the day. Conway was 2-4 with one run while Reiten was a perfect 2-2 with two runs scored. Fry was 2-4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Thompson was 2-3 with one walk.
