Dartmouth Men's Hockey Defeats Sacred Heart, 4-2
Jan. 20, 2006
HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team took a 4-2 victory over Sacred Heart in nonconference action this evening at Thompson Arena. David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) notched two points for the Big Green as Dartmouth improves to 8-9-1 on the season and Sacred Heart falls to 13-9-1.
The Big Green lit the lamp first when Brandon Harrington (Rochester, Minn.) potted his first collegiate goal at 9:50 in the opening frame. Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) won the faceoff in the Sacred Heart end, passing to Harrington for the tip-in. Dartmouth's second goal was during a 5-on-3 situation. Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) sent the puck in from the blue line to Garret Overlock (Greenwich, Conn.). Overlock played the puck out to Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) on a nifty behind the back pass which Glass buried for his fifth goal of the season.
Dartmouth quickly went up by three in the opening minutes of the second period. Jones passed the puck in from the left circle with a prone Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) tipping to Overlock who shot down low for the score. The Pioneers came charging back picking up goals at 7:56 and 19:29 of the second to pull within one. Chris Connerty and Rocco Molinaro had the goals for Sacred Heart.
Jones put the game away for the Big Green at 5:26 of the third when Mike Ouellette passed behind to his waiting linemate who one-timed the puck over netminder Jason Smith's left shoulder on a laser shot giving Dartmouth the 4-2 victory.
Big Green goalie Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) picked up his seventh win of the season and is 7-5-1 on the year. The sophomore made 23 saves on the night while Smith recorded 38 saves and is is now 11-8-1.
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow in its final nonconference game of the season. The Big Green hosts Holy Cross at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
