HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Jeannie Cullen (Janesville, Wis.) had 21 points, including 18 in the first half, as the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Brown, 73-51, on Friday night at Leede Arena. Cullen went 5-of-8 from three-point range and Dartmouth as a team nailed 11 of its 15 attempts from behind the arc for 73.3 percent accuracy. The victory helps the Big Green improve to 11-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Ivy League, while the Bears fall to 8-8 overall and suffer their first defeat in conference play and drop to 2-1.
"I'm delighted with our assists and the way we played defense. We did a good job of containing Sarah Hayes and Collen Kelly," said Dartmouth head coach Chris Wielgus.
The Big Green had assists on 20 of its 24 baskets and limited Hayes, the Ivy League's leading scorer, to just eight points and Kelly to five points. Brown was led by Ashley King-Bischof who tallied 14 points off the bench.
Dartmouth jumped out to an early 11-4 lead after a Cullen three-pointer, but the Bears were able to claw back and tie the score at 18-18. The Big Green used a 10-3 spurt to grab a 28-21 lead after a Cullen jumper with 7:08 left in the first. Dartmouth held a 38-28 edge at halftime, but put the game away early in the second period.
During the first six minutes of the second half, the Big Green outscored the Bears, 10-1, and held a 48-29 advantage before King-Bischof hit a layup with 13:46 left. Dartmouth's defense in the second half was stifling, however. Brown, which had connected on 41.4 percent of its shots in the first period, was limited to just 21.9 percent shooting in the second half. The Bears had made 44.4 percent of their three-point attempts in the first half and that fell to 22.2 percent in the second.
The Big Green, meanwhile shot a robust 50.0 percent in the first half and 52.2 percent in the second half. The numbers from three-point range were a gaudy 73.3 percent in the first period and 100.0 percent in the second period.
Junior Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) added 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Big Green, while sophomore Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) had 11 points and eight boards. Senior point guard Angie Soriaga (College Station, Texas) dished out eight assists and junior Fatima Kamara (Carrolton, Texas) chipped in nine points and four assists off the bench.
The Big Green will be in action again tomorrow night, when it hosts Yale at 7:00 p.m.
