HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team (10-10-1, 8-5-1 ECACHL) improved to .500 with a solid, 6-3, win over Rensselaer (11-13-3, 5-6-3) tonight in Thompson Arena. Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) was a multiple-point scorer for the first time in his career and David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) was key with three assists in the win, matching his career high.
The Big Green scored early in the first period. Senior captain Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) notched his first goal in six games at 3:53 into the first. Jones passed in front of the net to Ouellette who trickled the puck across the line. Garret Overlock (Greenwich, Conn.) also assisted.
The Dartmouth freshmen gave the Big Green a 2-0 lead at 10:17. Swallow picked up his first collegiate strike when he one-timed a pass from Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.). Defenseman John Gibson (Okotoks, Alta.), who had his first collegiate goal last night, recorded his first career assist.
The Engineers got one back with less than three minutes to go in the stanza. Keith MCWilliams fired the puck over netminder Mike Devine's (Orchard Park, N.Y.) shoulder as the Big Green took a 2-1 lead into the break.
Dartmouth was the only team to get on the board in the second frame. Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.) notched what proved to be the game winner at 4:36 with Jones and Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) assisting.
The third period had RPI scoring to pull within one, 3-2 as Scott Romfo lasered a shot that Devine never even saw but the Big Green proceeded to score three unanswered goals in a span of five minutes to pull away. Lewis, J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) and Swallow all lit the lamp to give the Big Green the 6-3 victory. Jones, Ouellette, Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.), Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) Shields and Ryan Bellows (St. Catharines, Ont.) all recorded helpers.
Devine finished the night with 17 saves and had his record improve to 9-6-1. Mathias Lange started the night in goal for Rensselaer as he made 27 saves. Jordon Alford came on in relief midway through the third period and he finished with five saves.
Dartmouth went 1-for-5 on the power play and the Big Green allowed the Engineers an extra-man goal for the first time in three games. The game helps cap off a weekend-long celebration of 100 years of Dartmouth hockey. With 4,444 people in attendance tonight the Big Green welcome back over 100 alumni.
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Yale and Brown for 7:00 pm tilts on both nights.
