Men's Golf
vs Metropolis Intercollegiate
10/12/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
Hanover Country Club is home to both the Dartmouth men's and women's golf teams who now benefit from an extensive renovation that concluded in June, 2002.
Architect Ron Prichard, a leading expert on Donald Ross courses, headed the $3 million project that included four new holes and renovated tee/green complexes on the remaining 14 holes. The renovation retained HCC's distinctive, New England style, while extending the long course to nearly 6,500 yards and a par of 71. The first five holes and No. 18 (called "The Loop") are laid out near the clubhouse. Holes Nos. 6-17 are on the other side of the property near Lyme Road and are separated by a deep gully, one of the noteworthy characteristics of HCC. Golfers use a bridge to traverse the gully and are required to carry it with their tee shots on Nos. 6 and 18. The number of bunkers at Hanover C.C. was doubled.
In addition, golfers now will face the gully for their second shots on the new No. 17. On the other side of Lyme Road is a driving range area and four practice holes, where college golfers can fine-tune their games. Collegiate golfers store their clubs and shoes in a special team room at the HCC clubhouse and are not assessed any fees for play or practice at HCC. Club and shoe storage are complimentary.
In addition, members of the Dartmouth women's golf team are just a short drive away from Fore-U Golf Center, situated on Rte. 12-A in West Lebanon, N.H. Approximately 10 minutes away from campus, the center is owned and operated by Meredith and Jennifer Johnson. Captain of the 1997-98 Dartmouth women's golf team, Meredith was an Academic All-Ivy selection in the spring of 1998 and a four-year letterwinner in women's golf for the Big Green.
When golfers want to get a taste of something different, there are several other fine courses located in the Upper Valley area, including Country Club of New Hampshire (Sutton, N.H.), Green Mountain National Golf Course (Killington, Vt.) which has hosted Futures Tour events, Eastman Golf Links (Grantham, N.H.), Quechee Golf Club (Quechee, Vt.), Woodstock Country Club (Woodstock, Vt.) and Crown Point (Springfield, Vt.). ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Members of the Dartmouth men's and women's golf teams have full access to the Big Green's athletic facilities. These include:
Hanover Country Club (18 holes)
Team Practice Facility which includes 500 yards of fairway, with a two-sided range to go with practice green and bunker opened in the fall of 2015
Two Indoor Hitting Bays combined putting green along with Two Trackman Simulators
Floren Varsity Weight RoomA six-lane, 200-yard polyurethane indoor track in Leverone Field House
A two-lane running track measuring 1/13 of a mile in the West Gym of Alumni Gym

"I know that many of you have already enjoyed our new course and that some of you are still looking forward to playing on it. It represents a marvelous accomplishment. You look out behind me and you know that this is a special place. This golf course is beautiful, it's challenging, it's wholly welcoming. It's a place to learn. It's a treasure for us and it will be a joy for so many generations to come."
-Dartmouth College President James Wright '64a, from remarks at a formal celebration of the renovation (August 2, 2002 at Hanover Country Club)
"The renovation provides golfers throughout the Upper Valley with a course more suited to all levels of play. At the same time it will present the most accomplished players, local and collegiate, with a true test of golf. The Hanover Country Club now compares favorably with the best courses in northern New England."
-Roger Demment, associate director of athletics and HCC project manager (July/August, 2002 Dartmouth Alumni Magazine)
"I speak for my teammates, classmates and myself when I say I think we are truly fortunate to have this amazing opportunity to excel both in top-notch classes and on a first-rate golf course."
-Shannon Rogers '04, from remarks at the HCC celebration (August 2, 2002)
