HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth football team is still looking for its first win of the season as they travel down to Columbia this Saturday for their first of five remaining Ivy League games.
This game will mark the 76th time the two programs have met, with the Big Green coming away with a win in 58 of them. The last time the Big Green won, in the City, was in 2002 when they knocked off the Lions in a nail-biter, 24-23.
Columbia, who got shut out by Penn last weekend, hosts the Big Green while holding a 3-2 overall record and a 0-2 mark in the Ivies. Despite not scoring in 60 minutes of play, Lions quarterback Craig Hormann passed for 246 of the teams 274 total yards.
“They play very hard. They're very aggressive and very physical,” said head coach
Buddy Teevens. “They're in every ball game and it's certainly going to be a tall order going down and playing them at their place.”
In last weekend's homecoming contest, a physical Holy Cross team edged out the Big Green, 24-21, in overtime. The chip-shot field goal in overtime gave the Crusaders their third win in a row over the Dartmouth squad.
“It was a very competitive contest. They're a good football team,” said Teevens. “We had opportunities to make plays in critical situations, and we just didn't, and that was pretty much the sum of it.”
The Big Green will continue to count on senior quarterback
Mike Fritz (Houston, Texas) to be a catalyst for their big play making. Against Holy Cross, Fritz passed for 147 yards and rushed for another 86 on the day.
“He's picked up some very key rushing yards for us,” Teevens said. “He's a guy that's very important to our offense and will continue to improve for us.”
The team's remaining schedule consists of all Ivy League opponents, making Saturday an important start to the second half of the season.
Saturday's game can be heard live in Hanover on radio stations WDCR-AM (1340) and WFRD-FM (99.3) with Bob Lipman handling play-by-play and Wayne Young doing color commentary, or via the internet at www.DartmouthSports.com.
