NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Dartmouth's women's hockey team ended an 11-period scoring drought midway through the first period on Saturday, then later scored three unanswered goals to stop a three-game losing streak by downing Yale, 4-2.
Yale (2-4-2, 2-2-1 ECACHL) took the early lead, 1-0, when Maggie Westfal scored at 9:21 of the first period. Dartmouth's 228:27 scoreless streak was finally broken just 16 seconds later at 9:37 when freshman Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) put one in the net with the assists going to seniors Danielle Grundy (Kelowna, B.C.) and Tiffany Hagge (Coon Rapids, Minn.). The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission after Jenna Spring scored an unassisted tally.
Bowman added a power play tally 5:41 into the second frame to knot the game, 2-2, with Hagge and senior Alex Zagaria (Rochester, Minn.) getting credit for assists. The teams remained deadlocked at two apiece heading into the intermission despite the Big Green outshooting the Elis 19-3 in the frame.
Dartmouth (4-4-0, 2-4-0 ECACHL) took the lead, 3-2, when Hagge scored just 2:40 into the third off feeds from Bowman and Grundy. The Big Green got an insurance goal at 10:24 from sophomore Carrie Thompson (Shorewood, Minn.) on the power play to make it a two-goal game, 4-2.
Bowman finished with two goals and an assist, while Hagge had a goal and two assists, including her fourth gamewinner of the season. Senior Kate Lane (Wingham, Ont.) stopped all 13 shots she faced in relief to earn the victory. Sarah Love stopped 40 for the Elis.
Dartmouth resumes play after Thanksgiving when it hosts the Dartmouth Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Thompson Arena. The Big Green faces Wisconsin on the 26th and the Ottawa Raiders on the 27th. New Hampshire will also participate in the tournament. Gametimes are at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. both days.
