HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth scored a goal in all three periods, but a two-goal burst in 13 seconds by top-ranked Wisconsin midway through the third put the Badgers on top for good as they downed the Big Green, 4-3, in the second game of the Dartmouth Classic. New Hampshire topped the Ottawa Raiders earlier in the day, 6-2.
Wisconsin and Dartmouth traded goals in the opening stanza, with the Badgers' Jinelle Zaugg getting her first of the afternoon at 10:27. The Big Green responded at 12:31 when sophomore Carrie Thompson (Shorewood, Minn.) potted her fourth of the season by deflecting a shot from junior Caroline Ethier (Matagami, Que.).
Dartmouth (4-5-0) took its first lead of the game at 14:26 of the second just after killing off a penalty. Freshman Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) came out of the box and picked up the puck in the neutral zone, then scored her first collegiate goal on a breakaway as the puck trickled past goalie Meghan Horras and into the net. Senior Kate Lane (Wingham, Ont.) kept Dartmouth ahead going into the second intermission by stopping a wild flurry by the Badgers in the period's closing seconds, denying Zaugg three times and Sara Bauer once.
Wisconsin (12-1-0) tied the game, 2-2, on a power play tally 2:26 into the final stanza. Bauer was credited with the goal. Dartmouth took a 3-2 lead when Ethier potted her fourth of the season, but Wisconsin responded in bang-bang fashion. At 10:32, Bauer got her second of the game to knot the game, 3-3. Then before the Big Green could recover, the Badgers scored again at 10:45 on Zaugg's second of the afternoon.
Lane finished with 34 saves, while Horras had 15 for the Badgers. Each team scored once on the power play.
In earlier action at the Dartmouth Classic, New Hampshire received a stellar day from Sam Faber, who notched a hat trick and added a pair of assists for a five-point effort. Ottawa received goals from Erica Olson and Christin Powers.
No. 4 New Hampshire and No. 1 Wisconsin face-off tomorrow at 1 p.m., while the Big Green takes on Ottawa at 4 p.m in day two of the Dartmouth Classic.
