PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Dartmouth's women's hockey team got back to .500 on the season with a hard fought non-conference victory over Providence, 2-1. With the victory, head coach Mark Hudak remained unbeaten against Hockey East schools, holding a perfect 13-0-0 record against the conference.
After a scoreless first period, Dartmouth opened the scoring at 18:57 of the second on a power play goal by sophomore Carrie Thompson (Shorewood, Minn.). On the play, freshman Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) sent a pass across the ice to classmate Katie Gray (Calgary, Alta.) who took the initial shot that was deflected in by Thompson.
Dartmouth (5-5-0) upped its lead to 2-0 early in the third frame when senior Tiffany Hagge (Coon Rapids, Minn.) found herself alone with the Friars' keeper. Hagge's shot was stopped, but freshman Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) picked up the rebound and put the puck into a wide-open cage for her team-leading 10th point of the season.
Providence (9-6-2) cut the lead in half, 2-1, when it scored on a flurry in front of senior Kate Lane (Wingham, Ont.) on the power play at 13:24. Jenna Kelich was credited with the goal while Katelynn Laffin and Caitlin Malboeuf picked up the assists. The Friars pulled their goalie following a timeout at 17:46 of the period, but Dartmouth was able to close out the game and hold on for the victory.
Lane stopped 23 shots, including 9 in the final frame, while Jana Bugden made 20 saves for the Friars. Both teams scored once while on the power play.
The Big Green returns to action Wednesday, December 14 when it travels down to Cambridge, Mass. to face archrival Harvard in the squad's final game of 2005. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
