HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth football team will look to rebound on the road against Cornell after being shut out at home last weekend by Harvard.
Last weekend, Dartmouth was blanked for the first time this season, when the Big Green played host to Ivy League opponent Harvard. The Crimson held Dartmouth to a season-low 183 yards of total offense in their 28-0 win. Harvard also forced the Big Green squad to make an uncharacteristic amount of turnovers, giving up three interceptions
“We just turned the ball over too much,” said head coach
Buddy Teevens. “That was the real big thing. We just made too many mistakes. We generally gauge our productivity by the number of plays we have each series, and if you go three-and-out all the time, it's not a real good day.”
The last time Dartmouth traveled to Cornell and came away with a win was back in 1996, when the Big Green knocked off the home team, 38-21. The Big Red is coming off a thrilling win against Princeton last weekend, beating the Tigers, 14-7. Cornell's win ruined the Tigers hopes at an undefeated season, as they were a perfect 6-0 until the loss.
The Big Green's defensive core will have to be ready to stop a Cornell offense that is averaging 340 yards of total offense each game. Quarterback Nathan Ford is averaging almost 170 yards in the air. His favorite receivers, Zac Canty and Jesse Baker, have a combined 726 yards and four scores on the season.
“The secondary allowed just that one big score, but other than that we covered fairly well and tackled very securely,” said Teevens. “So, after the initial rush of points, we played pretty good defense.”
Big Green defenders
Justin Cottrell (Somers Point, N.J.) and
Ian Wilson (Burbank, Calif.) lead the team in tackles, making 122 stops between the two of them. Cottrell racked up, a career high, 17 tackles and a forced fumble against Harvard, and was named to this weeks Ivy League Honor Roll for his performance.
Dartmouth will look to improve offensively against the Big Red who is giving up an average of 330 yards each game. Senior quarterback
Mike Fritz (Houston, Texas) will again be under center for the Big Green leading the charge. Between throwing and rushing, Fritz is averaging almost 200 yards of offense a game by himself.
Saturday's game can be heard live in Hanover on radio stations WDCR-AM (1340) and WFRD-FM (99.3) with Bob Lipman handling play-by-play and Wayne Young doing color commentary, or via the internet at www.DartmouthSportsRadio.net
