Boston, Mass. - Senior captain Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Dartmouth women's basketball team (1-5) to its first win of the season, 73-67 in overtime at Northeastern (0-7) this
afternoon. During the game, Taylor scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the 13th player to do so and the ninth fastest. The contest marked the 800th game in the storied history of the Dartmouth program.
Sophomore guard Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) hit a jumper with 26 seconds left in regulation to give Dartmouth the 59-58 lead. On the next possession, Northeastern's Stephanie Hodell hit one of two free-throws to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The Big Green wasted little time getting going in the extra period, as Schram nailed a three-pointer to open overtime. Dartmouth controlled the full five minutes, outscoring Northeastern 14-8 on the strength of six points each from Schram and Taylor to take the win.
After a back-and-forth battle in the opening minutes of the game, Northeastern went on a 9-2 run to go up 18-11 at 9:38. Frustration built for the Big Green as each time it managed a bucket, the Huskies answered with one of their own. Northeastern held its largest lead of the game at 2:44, up 32-19 before rookie Margaret Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) scored four straight to take it to 32-23 at the half. Each team had eight turnovers in a sloppy half in which Dartmouth shot just 25 percent from the field.
The Big Green came out swinging in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 18-8 in the first seven minutes to
take a 41-40 lead at 13:06. Five different Dartmouth players scored in the run, including Taylor, whose 1,000th point came at the 15:10 mark. The lead would be short-lived, however, as Northeastern went on a 9-0 run spurred by Lucia Pablos to go up 49-41 at 10:41.
The teams traded buckets for the balance of the second half, with Dartmouth shooting a much-improved 53.6 percent from the field. The Big Green tied it up at 57-57 after a pair of free-throws by Taylor with just under three minutes left. Northeastern's Kateema McLean hit one free-throw to reclaim the lead. Her team was called for a lane violation on the second shot, giving Dartmouth the ball back and setting up Schram's heroic shot and the overtime finish.
The Big Green was 4-7 from the field and 5-6 from the free-throw line in overtime to seal the victory.
Taylor finished the day with 26 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two blocks, playing all 45 minutes. She now ranks 13th in career scoring with 1,013 points and is tied with Assistant Coach Courtney Banghart ?00 for seventh in career assists with 248.
Schram scored in double-figures for the third consecutive game with 16 points in a career-high 44 minutes. Junior
Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds.
Northeastern had four players in double figures, led by Hodell's 11-point, 16-rebound double-double.
The Big Green will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Stony Brook at 7:00 p.m. at Leede Arena.
