PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite a career-high 15 rebounds and nine points from senior Krista Perry (Boise, Idaho), the Dartmouth women's basketball team suffered its first Ivy League loss and fell to Brown, 59-54, in overtime on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Center. The Big Green is now 17-5 overall and 8-1 in the Ivy League, while the Bears improve to 15-8 and 9-1 in the conference.
Junior Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) led Dartmouth with 12 points and senior Jeannie Cullen (Janesville, Wis.) added 11 points. Junior Fatima Kamara (Carrollton, Texas) chipped in eight points and seven rebounds. Brown was led by Sarah Hayes, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Colleen Kelly, who also tossed in 14 points.
Both teams got off to a cold start shooting in the first half as Brown connected on 37.9 percent of its shots and Dartmouth hit 34.8 percent of its attempts. The Bears led 27-21 at the intermission, and built a nine-point advantage early in the second half after a Hayes layup with 16:57 left. Dartmouth answered with an 8-0 run capped by a layup by Perry to trim the gap to 33-32 with 15:02 left.
The Big Green finally drew even at 38-38 when Kamara hit a jumper at the 10:12 mark. Brown led by no more than five the rest of the way and held a 50-46 edge with 3:59 left. The Dartmouth defense clamped down and held Brown scoreless for the remainder of regulation and two layups by Krista Perry tied the score at 50-50 and sent the game into overtime.
In the extra session, the Big Green took an early lead on a layup by Kamara, but Brown answered on a conventional three-point play by Lena McAfee. Hayes then made four of six free throws to give Brown a five-point lead with 16 seconds remaining. A layup by Kamara brought the Big Green to within three points, but Ashley King-Bischof answered with a basket to give Brown the victory.
The Big Green will be in action again on Friday, February 24, when it hosts Princeton. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
