HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Sean Offers (St. Albert, Alta.) scored a goal and added an assist as the Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Yale, 3-1, in ECACHL quarterfinal action Saturday night. Combined with Friday night's 5-1 victory over the Bulldogs, Dartmouth (18-11-2) defeated Yale, 2-0, in the best of three series. The Big Green now advances to Albany, N.Y. for the ECACHL semifinal round.
Yale (10-20-2) got on the board first, when Brad Mills scored at the midway point of the first period. The slapshot sailed right over Dartmouth goalie Mike Devine's (Orchard Park, N.Y.) shoulder.
Four minutes later, Dartmouth took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Senior captain Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) scored at the 13:25 mark on an assist by Offers, knotting the game at 1-1.
The Big Green took the lead for good at 17:13 when Ryan Bellows (St. Catharines, Ont.) made it 2-1. Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) won the puck along the boards firing to Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) at the point. Lovejoy put the puck on net with Bellows there to receive the pass, going around Yale netminder Alec Richards for the goal.
After a scoreless second period, Offers added an insurance goal with 3:20 gone in the third, connecting on a slapshot from the left point after senior teammate Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) won the faceoff.
In the nets, Richards had 44 saves while Dartmouth's Devine made 20. The sophomore made 11 in the second period. Dartmouth outshot Yale, 47-21, including a 21-4 edge in the opening 20 minutes. The 47 shots on goal is the second most in a game for the Big Green this season.
The No. 1 seed in this year's tournament, Dartmouth returns to Albany's Pepsi Arena after missing out last winter. The Big Green had made four straight trips to Albany in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
