ALBANY, N.Y. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team, ranked 15th in the country, fell to No. 12 Harvard this afternoon in the ECACHL semifinals, 10-1. Dartmouth had met Harvard in the semifinals three of the last four years, and all three times the Crimson came out ahead of the Big Green.
The Big Green controlled play in the first, but couldn't put one behind netminder John Daigneau. Senior Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.) had Dartmouth's best chance in the period, but his wrister clanged off the crossbar. The Crimson broke the ice at 10:59 on Tom Walsh's rebound goal, and from there it was all Harvard, who took the lead into the break, 2-0.
The Crimson added four more goals in the second to take a commanding 6-0 lead into the second intermission chasing sophomore Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) from the net after 40 minutes.
After a seventh Harvard goal, Dartmouth got one back when sophomore Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) roofed a backhander from in front of the net. Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Sampson had the assists. The Crimson tacked on three more to make the final score 10-1, the first time the Big Green have allowed double digits since a 10-2 defeat at Boston University in 1994.
Harvard went 2-5 on the power play while Dartmouth was 0-4 with the extra skater. Devine finished with 17 saves while freshman Dan Goulding (Toronto, Ont.) made eight in the third period.
The Big Green will play in the ECACHL consolation game at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon against either Cornell or Colgate.
