HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth softball team swept the Harvard Crimson today in both team's final Ivy doubleheader of the season. The two victories give the Big Green a record of 14-22 overall and 7-7 in the league while Harvard falls to 18-23, 6-8 Ivy. The sweep is the first for Dartmouth in the 10 years of Big Green softball.
In Game One the Big Green rode a three-run sixth inning to a 3-0 win while in Game Two the two teams played three extra stanzas before Dartmouth scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth taking a 3-2 victory.
In the first game Erika Owen (Newhall, Calif.) started things off with a one-out double before Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) singled to left field and advanced on the throw. Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) singled to right field with Owen scoring and Fry crossing home after a throwing error on Harvard's outfield. Alicia Petryk (White Bear Lake, Minn.) continued the hitting with a single up the middle to score Gleason.
Angela Megaw earned her second career shutout to improve her record to 4-12 on the season. The sophomore walked just one batter while striking out six. At the plate Gleason went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
In the nightcap Harvard scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead but Dartmouth came right back tying the game in the bottom half of the frame.
Dartmouth got its first run of the game in the sixth inning when Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) singled up the middle and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Gleason singled with a bunt before Petryk singled up the middle to drive Chifcian home.
In the bottom of the seventh another Chifcian hit brought the tying run across the plate as the two teams then traded two scoreless innings.
In the bottom of the tenth Denise Hasson (Encino, Calif.) singled to start things off for the Big Green. With two outs Fry doubled to left field plating Gleason for the 3-2 win.
Gleason led Dartmouth going 3-for-5 with one RBI while Chifcian, Fry and Petryk all had two hits. In the circle Stephanie Trudeau went the complete game giving up three hits while striking out a season-high nine batters.
