HANOVER, N.H. - Sophomore Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) scored one goal and assisted on two others, leading the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 4-0 shutout of Holy Cross in a non-conference game Tuesday night. In the nets, Dartmouth's Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made 31 saves for his fourth career shutout.
After a scoreless first period, Swallow gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead with 4:37 gone in the second period. T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) brought the puck down passing to Nick Johnson (Calgary, Ålta.). Johnson sent the puck flying to Swallow in front of the net as the sophomore one timed it over netminder Charlie Lockwood.
The Big Green (7-8-2) had a three-goal outburst within a five-minute stretch late in the third period.
Defenseman Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) staked Dartmouth to a 2-0 lead with 5:17 left, scoring on a slapshot on the power play. Swallow and Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) both had the assists. About a minute later, junior David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) pushed it to 3-0 off assists from Lovejoy and J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.). Sophomore Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) added an insurance goal on the power play with 16 seconds left. Swallow and Johnson scored the helpers.
For Holy Cross (8-12-4), Lockwood stopped 22 of Dartmouth's 26 shots.
The contest was part of the Commissioner's Cup, a 33-game series taking place among the six Division I hockey conferences. In its third season, the Cup went to the ECACHL the first two years.
Dartmouth is back in action on Friday, January 19, hosting Canisius at 7 p.m. in Thompson Arena.
