HANOVER, N.H. – A career-night by Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) led the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 6-3 win over visiting Canisius in Thompson Arena. The third line for the Big Green proved key as Pritchard, paired with Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) and Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.), combined for nine points. Pichard notched a goal and three assists on the night.
With the win Dartmouth improves to 8-8-2 on the season while Canisius falls to 6-17-2.
Shields, Grecu and Pritchard had all the scoring in the first period as the Big Green took a 2-0 lead into the break after one. On the first goal of the contest Grecu skated up the right side boards in the Canisius zone sending the puck toward the net. Shields crashed the net knocking it in to give the Big Green the 1-0 advantage. Dartmouth extended its lead to two goals when Pritchard skated across the Canisius zone, faked an attempt to the left and shot into the top right corner for his third of the season.
The Golden Griffins answered early in the second period when Vincent Amigone put Canisius on the board. David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) gave the Big Green the two-goal lead back. T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) fired a shot from the right point with Jones there to tip it past netminder Andrew Loewen. Jason Weeks scored the next two goals allowing the Golden Griffins to tie the game at 3-3.
The three goals by the Griffs were their most against an ECACHL opponent since Feb. 25, 1989, against Union.
A three-goal spurt during a 3:29 stretch of the third period allowed Dartmouth to put the game away. J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.), Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) and Joe Gaudet (Hanover, N.H.) all scored. Dartmouth regained the lead on a shorthanded goal at 4:09 of the third period when Wyman blasted a one-timer from Pritchard into the lower-left corner of the net for his third of the season. The Big Green extended its lead back to two goals when Lovejoy skated into and across the Canisius zone. Lovejoy fired a shot through a Dartmouth screen to make the score 5-3. Gaudet's first collegiate goal of the season made it 6-3 a few minutes later.
Joe Grossman (Foxboro, Mass.) got his first win in goal for the Big Green. The rookie made 17 saves on the night, starting in place for junior Mike Devine who had started every game in net until tonight. For Canisius Andrew Loewen made 38 saves as Dartmouth outshot the Griffins 44-20.
"It was good to get Grosssman some playing time and allow Devine some rest," head coach Bob Gaudet said. "I thought he played well and as a team we had some moments where we might have struggled a bit but the guys played hard against a solid hockey team. There are still things we continue to work on but it's coming together and they're playing hard every night."
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow night hosting another Atlantic Hockey foe in Sacred Heart. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
