HANOVER, N.H. - Junior goaltender Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made 35 saves and was credited with an assist as the Dartmouth men's hockey team held on for a 4-3 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday night.
Juniors Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) and David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) each had a goal and an assist for the Big Green.
The game was a wild one as 13 seconds separated a pair of Dartmouth goals, and only five seconds separated Big Green and Sacred Heart tallies.
Johnson opened the scoring for the Big Green 12:14 into the first period with a power play goal. Johnson moved in on netminder Jason Smith and snapped a shot that was stopped. However, Johnson followed the play and was able to poke the rebound into the open corner of the net for his sixth goal of the year.
In the second period, the Big Green used goals just 13 seconds apart by Jones and freshman T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) as the Dartmouth lead went to 3-0 with 34 seconds elapsed. Jones scored his team leading 12th goal of the year when he pounded home a rebound on a loose puck in the crease 21 seconds into the period. Just 13 seconds later, TJ Galiardi netted his eighth goal off a pass from Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and Devine.
For Sacred Heart (13-7-4), Pierre-Luc O'Brien had a power-play goal at 12:23 of the second, making it 3-1.
Dartmouth opened up a 4-1 lead in the third on a goal by Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) with 5:26 left. Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) fed Pritchard a pefect cross ice pass as he redirected it into the net.
Five seconds later, Sacred Heart's Eric Giosa narrowed the Dartmouth lead to 4-2, and Bear Trapp potted an extra man goal with 43 seconds left.
For Sacred Heart, Jason Smith made 24 saves. Sacred Heart out-shot Dartmouth 38-28 for the game. Each team was able to convert once in four power play tries.
Dartmouth returns to league play on Friday and Saturday, January 26-27, traveling to Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
