POTSDAM, N.Y. – Dartmouth could not hold onto a two-goal lead as Clarkson tied the game at 4-4 with less that 2:00 to play. J.T. Wyman had a multiple scoring game with a goal and an assist.
The Big Green went up early in the first period on a power play tally by Wyman. Mike Hartwick (Bedford, N.H.) got the puck behind his own net bringing it all the way down and around the Clarkson goal, passing out to Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) on the point. Lewis passed quickly back to Wyman who shot stick side on Knights netminder David Leggio.
Late in the period Dartmouth netminder Mike Devine kept the Knights off the board when a turnover in front of the Dartmouth net allowed a Clarkson shot with Devine jumping in the air and falling backward on the puck to prevent it from going over the line.
Clarkson came out firing in the second frame tying the game up on a 5-on-3 power play at 9:30. Chris D'Alvise fired glove side over Devine's shoulder for the equalizer.
Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) pulled the Big Green ahead at 4:31 as he tipped in a Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) pass around the right side of the net. Wyman was also credited with an assist.
Clarkson tied the game again at 17:41 in the final period on a fluke short handed goal by Philippe Paquet. A Dartmouth defender tried to block the puck but it bounced up over Devine's outstretched arm.
Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) potted his first collegiate goal, giving the Big Green the lead back. Joe Gaudet (Hanover, N.H.) brought the puck around the left side of the Clarkson cage shooting to Gillam who fired into the left corner with John Gibson (Calgary, Alta.) also assisting.
Less than three minutes later David Jones scored a Dartmouth short handed goal to give the Big Green a 4-2 lead. A Clarkson turnover at center ice had the puck bouncing to Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) who shot forward to a streaking Jones as the junior extended his scoring streak to seven games.
The Golden Knights got one back at 6:45 as Devine was faked to the right and before he could get back Nick Dodge lift the puck into the back of the net on a power play goal.
Clarkson evened the game at four with under 2:00 to play. A shot fired by Dodge over Devine's right shoulder tied the game at 4-4.
The overtime frame was not without excitement as both goalies had to withstand pressure. Devine finished the game with 28 saves while Leggio had 20.
The tie brings Dartmouth's record 9-8-3, 5-5-3 in the ECAC Hockey League while Clarkson is now 15-6-4, 7-3-3 in the ECACHL. Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow night in a 7:00 pm match up with St. Lawrence.
