CANTON, N.Y. – Brock McBride notched two goals, powering No. 17 St. Lawrence to a 4-1 win over Dartmouth men's hockey in Canton, N.Y. The loss drops the Big Green to 9-9-3 overall, 5-6-3 in the ECAC Hockey League. With the win, SLU is 14-10-2, 10-3-1 in the ECACHL and moves into first place in the league standings.
A power play strike by St. Lawrence at 18:23 of the first period gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead. Drew Bagnall tipped in a shot from directly in front of the Dartmouth nets.
The Big Green evened things up with an even-strength goal by freshman Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) at 10:59 on his second strike of the weekend. Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) dumped the puck down the ice before leaving on a line change. Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) picked up the puck at the blue line skating around behind the St. Lawrence net, setting up the rookie out in front.
Another power play goal by the Saints to start the second period gave SLU a 2-1 lead. McBride benefited from a Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) rebound stuffing the puck into the back of the net.
St. Lawrence pulled ahead by two at 13:04 when a shot by McBride was knocked down, sailing high over Devine's stick. An argument by Devine for high sticking went unheeded so the goal and 3-1 lead remained intact.
The Saints kept pressure up for the entire stanza as SLU finished by outshooting the Big Green, 23-11 through the first two periods.
Max Taylor gave the Saints the three goal lead with under three minutes to play. SLU finished the game with two power play tallies and 31 shots to Dartmouth's 24.
Devine finished with 27 saves while Alex Petizian had 23 for St. Lawrence.
The Big Green is back in action next weekend with home tilts against Rensselaer on Friday and then Union on Saturday both games at 7:00.
