HANOVER, N.H. – Nick Johnson (Toronto, Ont.) powered the Dartmouth men's hockey team to an ECAC Hockey League win over Rensselaer on Friday at Thompson Arena. Johnson scored the Big Green's final two goals while Dartmouth netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made 31 saves picking up his ninth win of the season.
J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) put Dartmouth on the board late in the first period. Mike Hartwick (Bedford, N.H.) passed out to Wyman at center ice. Wyman brought the puck down, moving around defenders to lift it over RPI netminder Jordan Alford's stick hand into the right side of the cage.
Rensselaer evened the score 2:15 into the second period off a goal by Reed Kipp with assists going to Oren Eizenman and Kirk MacDonald. Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Minn.) pulled the Big Green ahead 41 seconds later. Shots by T.J. Galiardi (Toronto, Ont.) and Wyman brought the puck out to Swallow who tucked it around the bottom right post.
Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) gave Dartmouth a 3-1 lead on the Big Green's lone power play chance of the game. Just 15 seconds into the Engineers penalty a faceoff won by Galiardi put the puck on Lovejoy's stick. The senior shot once, going wide out to Galiardi who passed back to Lovejoy just steps outside the right side circle for his sixth goal of the season. Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) also assisted.
Jonathan Ornelas got one back for Rensselaer at 13:41 in the final period of play. After Dartmouth killed off a 5-on-3 penalty, Ornelas took advantage of Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) coming out of the box by lasering a shot over Devine's shoulder just past the blue line on the right side.
Johnson scored two unanswered goals at 18:36 and 19:45 to give the BIg Green the final score of 5-2. David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) assisted on Johnson's first goal before the junior potted an empty net strike for his eighth of the year.
Alford finished with 24 saves as the Engineers went 0-for-4 on power play attempts. RPI finished with 33 shots to Dartmouth's 29.
The Big Green will be back in action tomorrow in a 7:00 pm match up with Union.
