HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team survived a late scare by the Union Dutchmen to pick up valuable league points in the tight race for the ECAC Hockey League. The Big Green's J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) notched two goals while Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) and Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) each had two assists in the 3-2 victory.
Wyman put the Big Green (11-9-3, 7-6-3) on the board first, late in the opening stanza. After 10 shots on the goal, Swallow passed across the front of the Union net to Wyman who took a shot that was saved by netminder Justin Mrazek. Wyman took another shot as Mrazek fell backward to make the save allowing the puck to slide across the line. David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) was also credited with a helper.
Union (13-13-2, 6-10-0) tied things up with its first of two power play goals at 4:57 in the second period. Lane Caffaro took a shot that was saved by Big Green netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Torren Delforte was there for the rebound and put back.
The Big Green started the final period pressuring Mrazek with five straight shots on goal before Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) took a shot that allowed Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) to lift the puck over Mrazek's stick as Shields also assisted. Wyman then gave Dartmouth the two-goal lead midway through the period just seconds after a Dutchmen penalty expired. Swallow passed around the right side of the cage to a waiting Wyman for his second of the game.
The Dutchmen got one back two minutes later as T.J. Fox connected with Jeff Christiansen and Mario Valery-Trabucco. Then at 17:07 a five-minute major to Dartmouth's Grecu and an empty net allowed Union two extra skaters to end the period. Despite several attempts the Big Green was able to ice the puck and preserve the 3-2 lead.
Devine finished with 22 saves while Mrazek had 34. Union was 2-for-6 on power play attempts while Dartmouth went 0-for-6 while outshooting the Dutchmen 37-24.
The Big Green is currently in a tie with Cornell for fourth place with 17 points, just six points out of league-leading St. Lawrence. Dartmouth takes to the road next weekend with a Friday matchup against Quinnipiac at 7:00 and then at Princeton on Saturday at 7:00.
