HAMDEN, Conn. – Dartmouth's top line of David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.), Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) and Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) combined for four of Dartmouth's goals as the Big Green held on for a wild, 5-4 victory over Quinnipiac. With the win the Big Green improves to 12-9-3, 8-6-3 in the ECAC Hockey League while the Bobcats fall to 14-10-5, 9-5-4 in the league.
Quinnipiac came out firing as three straight shots on goal were saved by goalie Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Two pads saves and a kick save by the Dartmouth goalie, allowed the puck to rebound out to Glass as he passed up to a streaking Jones for Dartmouth's first strike of the game. Jones one-timed the puck over netminder Bud Fischer's left shoulder for the 1-0 lead at 3:27. Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.), in his first game back since an injury on Nov. 17, was also credited with a helper.Dartmouth took a quick 2-0 lead, just 1:24 later as Reid Cashman went to the box and was there less than nine seconds, giving the Big Green its first power-play opportunity of the game. Dartmouth won the faceoff as T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) passed over Jones on the wing. Jones took the shot with Johnson there to tip it under Fischer's pads.
The Bobcats got one back midway through the first as the Big Green had two men sitting in the box giving Quinnipiac a 5-on-3. Cashman made a down-ice pass to Ben Nelson as he tipped it up over Devine's glove hand with five seconds left in the first penalty. Dartmouth killed off the remaining penalty to preserve the lead. Quinnipiac ended the period with a five-minute major and game misconduct to Jamie Bates as the Big Green started the second with 1:30 of penalty time.
Quinnipiac opened the second stanza up with its 13th shorthanded goal of the season at 19:23. The puck was sent flying into the Dartmouth end with two Bobcats there. Mike Atkinson shot up over Devine's glove side to even the score at 2-2.
With another Dartmouth player in the box, two shots on goal by the Bobcats had Devine falling all the ice to make some big saves before things got exciting. Quinnipiac grabbed its first lead of the game at 8:54 as Chris Myers shot to the left pulling Devine out of position on the save with Jean-Marc Beaudoin there to shoot it back in.
Dartmouth pulled things even again as J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) skated down and put the puck in behind Fischer with Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and Galiardi assisting. Glass and Jones then combined for some nifty tricks as the duo gave the Big Green a 4-3 lead. Johnson passed over to Jones at the blueline as the junior fired over to Glass who ripped it over Fischer's head.
Quinnipiac looked like it was going to even things up late in the frame when Dan Henningson stole a Dartmouth pass and came streaking toward Devine. His first shot pulled the Dartmouth goalie completely out of the net leaving it free for a second Henningson shot but Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) was there to kick it out and keep the Big Green lead.
The Bobcats tied the game at 4-4 off another power play strike early in the third period. Cashman shot down low as Devine made the save but did not kick the puck out far enough as David Marshall was there to slowly push it over the line.
The Big Green grabbed the lead back at 10:19 with its own power play strike as Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) passed around the backside of the net to Johnson who was there to wrap it around the left post. Glass was credited with an assist for his third point of the night.
Devine finished with 29 saves while Fischer had 21. Quinnipiac outshot the Big Green 33-26 while Dartmouth was 2-for-6 on the power play and Quinnipiac was 3-for-9.
With the win the Big Green moves into sole possession of fourth place in the ECACHL, just six points out of first.
