PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers used goals in the first, second and third periods to ice the Dartmouth men's hockey team tonight in Baker Rink. The win gives Princeton a 10-12-3, 7-9-2 record while Dartmouth falls to 12-10-3, 8-7-3 ECACHL.
The Tigers jumped on the board first at 15:47 in the opening frame as Mark Magnowski took one shot that was saved easily by Dartmouth netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) but Magnowski followed through and scooped the rebound over Devine's legs for the goal.
Connor Shields tried to get one back two minutes later as J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) passed across ice to Shields with the sophomore taking his time, setting up his shot looking to go one-on-one with Princeton goalie B.J. Sklapsky. Sklapsky was up for the challenge, however making the kick save along with an additional two after shots by Wyman and Shields.
Another save by Sklapsky at 7:24 as the Big Green's Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) made a shorthanded rush preserved the lead. Dartmouth then went on the power play and had several shots on net with the Tiger netminder saving every one.
Midway through the second it was Devine who robbed the Tigers of three shots on an extended 5:00 penalty on the Big Green before Brett Westgarth finally found an answer for the Dartmouth netminder, sneaking the puck around Devine's left leg for the Tigers second goal of the game.
Princeton had three great chances to increase its lead late in the second period as the Tigers had several one-on-one rushes that resulted in Devine saving two and one going off Westgarth's stick right in front of the net.
Dartmouth started the final stanza with over a minute of power play time, generating four solid shots but Sklapsky kept the puck out of the net to keep the 2-0 Tiger lead.
The Big Green continued to pressure the Tigers netminder with three shots on goal in the final 2:00 minutes but despite the extra attacker Dartmouth could not get a goal. Kevin Kaiser added an empty net strike with 58 seconds left in the game to give Princeton a final score of 3-0.
The shutout was Sklapsky and Princeton's second in as many years at Hobey Baker Rink.
Devine finished with 28 saves while Sklapsky recorded 33. Dartmouth is back in action next weekend traveling to Brown on Friday for a 7:00 pm matchup and then a 4:00 pm nationally televised game on ESPNU at Yale on Sunday.
