New Haven, Conn. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team outshot Yale 17-8, but solid performances by both goalkeepers resulted in a 0-0 double-overtime tie in the Ivy League opener for both squads.
The Big Green peppered the Bulldogs defense with 17 shots, including a bullet by junior Dani Rothenberg (Atlanta, Ga.) with four seconds left, but Erik Geiger came up big with seven saves to preserve the shutout for Yale.
Dartmouth moves to 6-2-2 (0-0-1 (Ivy) with the tie while Yale is now 1-4-2 (0-0-1 Ivy).
"This was certainly a night of almosts for us. All Ivy games will be close and we created chances to get goals but Yale defended well and we couldn't quite get there in the end," said Head Coach Jeff Cook.
The Big Green held a slight 5-3 shot advantage in a first half in which neither team made much noise offensively. Dartmouth rallied to hold a 9-4 lead in shots in the second half but could not find the back of the net, forcing overtime.
Senior Nick Christman (Falmouth, Mass.) had a chance to be the hero with just under four minutes remaining in regulation when he fired a hard shot from the right side, but Geiger made a diving save to keep the Bulldogs alive.
The Green held a 3-1 shot advantage over the course of two overtime periods in which both teams were focused on maintaining solid defensive play.
The Bulldogs nearly won it late in the second overtime when Tyler Guse was fouled just outside the 18-yard box. Dartmouth junior goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) got some help from his defense with Guse's free kick deflected off a Big Green defender and popped over the crossbar. Yale could not convert on its ensuing corner kick and Dartmouth's last-second chance by Rothenberg was turned back as well.
Facing just seven shots, Milligan was only forced to make one save and earned his sixth shutout of the season. Freshman Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) led the Dartmouth offense with four shots. Senior Ale Frischeisen (Garden City, N.Y.) did a solid job anchoring the Big Green back line in the shutout.
Dartmouth had seven corner kicks to Yale's five and the teams combined for 33 fouls in a physical contest.
The Big Green has a week off before its next contest on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Penn at 7:30 p.m.
