Hanover -- He's a natural scrambler who's been compelled to rein it in.
He captured the starting quarterback job, lost it because of an injury resulting from said scrambling ability, and had to reclaim it this fall over another former starter.
With his team still in range of a national powerhouse, he sat for two series in favor of his backup, watching as the remote chance of an upset disappeared over the horizon.
Tom Bennewitz must occasionally feel like he's been adopted, not christened, as Dartmouth's starting quarterback. But the evolution of the senior from Weston, Conn., is the main reason why the Big Green has a fighting chance against undefeated and 17th-ranked Yale today in New Haven.
After throwing for 265 yards and two touchdowns in the Big Green's defeat of Penn last week, Bennewitz is the second-rated passer in the Ivy League. His seven scoring tosses already match Dartmouth's total from 2006.
At the same time, his five interceptions point to an ongoing battle between “system guy” and “gunslinger” for Bennewitz's soul.
It's easy to forget that, as a sophomore with the junior varsity, Bennewitz completed fewer than 42 percent of his passes.
