Providence, R.I. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team lost a heartbreaking 1-0 contest to Ivy League-leading Brown in front of over 3000 fans in Providence today.
The Bears clinched the Ivy Championship with the victory over the Big Green today.
Dartmouth and Brown battled for 82 hotly contested minutes before the Bears capitalized on a long thrown in from Darren Howerton. Dyaln Sheehan connected on the throw to score the winner for his team.
“I thought our performance tonight was great especially away from home,” said Head Coach Jeff Cook. “It was a great back and forth game and our guys gave an outstanding second half effort but could not find the goal.”
While Brown held an 11-3 shot advantage in the second half, the teams evened things up in the second with five a piece. The Bears had 16 shots to the Big Green's eight for the game and led in corner kicks, five to four.
Dartmouth junior goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) did a nice job in goal for the Green, making four saves while Paul Grandstand had three stops for Brown.
“Our attacking play with three forwards was very good at times,” noted Cook. “We gave away a goal on a set piece which was disappointing, but I was pleased with the effort.”
Tom Lobben (Glen Head, N.Y.) led the Big Green with two shots and also played an outstanding defensive game alongside classmate Ale Frischeisen (Garden City, N.Y.). Cook also credited Derek Stenquist for his play in midfield.
Dartmouth falls to 10-4-2, 4-1-1 Ivy while Brown improves to 14-1-1 and 6-0 in Ivy play.
The Big Green returns to Hanover next Saturday, Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m. to host Princeton in the regular season finale. Dartmouth will honor the six members of its senior class prior to the game.
