Queens, N.Y. - A turnover plagued afternoon saw the Dartmouth women's basketball team drop its fourth-straight of the season at St. John's.
The Big Green (0-4) succumbed to an athletic Red Storm squad (3-1) and despite moments of solid defensive play, was unable to capitalize on its stops offensively, falling 74-31.
Freshman forward Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) led Dartmouth with 11 points and seven rebounds.
The teams opened up the game trading baskets and were tied at 6-6 at the 13:54 mark after a Craft jumper. St John's guard Kelly McManmon caught fire from behind the arc, however and started a 12-0 Red Storm run with back-to-back threes. Joy McCorvey capped it with an inside basket to inflate the lead to 18-6 at 8:31. Brittney Smith and Sydmey Scott (Houston, Texas) hit back-to-back buckets to pull the Green within eight at 7:44.
Junior guard Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) took a hard charge at 6:47, which energized Dartmouth briefly, but the Red Storm did not miss a beat, capitalizing on Big Green turnovers to close the half on a 15-6 run to go up 33-15 at the half.
The Big Green's defense carried it through the first half but at the end of the first 20 minutes, Dartmouth's turnover count matched its point total of 15.
The second half was more of the same for the Big Green, who scored its first basket at 18:27 before a nearly four-minute drought saw the Red Storm inflate its lead to 49-17 before Michelle Meyer (Covington, Ohio) made a free throw at 14:48. After being held scoreless in the first half, St. John's leading scorer Monique McClean hit two of three-straight threes for her team to build the 55-18 lead.
The Red Storm was physical down the stretch, racking up fouls, but the Big Green struggled to cash in at the free throw line.
St. John's pounded Dartmouth on the boards, 51-30, and the Big Green's turnovers told the story on the afternoon with 25 miscues.
McManmon had the hot hand for St. John's while Dartmouth did a nice job on McClean and Craft held All-Big East star Kia Wright without a field goal, scoring all four of her points from the free-throw line.
The Big Green is back in action at home at Leede Arena on Thursday when it hosts Northeastern at 7:00 p.m.
